This mandapa (colomned hall) is opposite the east gate of the Meenakashi Amman Temple. It was probably part of the temple. It still has many of the features of the actual temple - statues, carvings, pillars - but without any restricted entry, no fees and no photography restrictions. It is partially full with a market which in itself is fascinating and full of things to buy. The central passageway is empty except for statures and carvings. All the storeholders are friendly and give minimal hassle. Also see the 20 or so tailors all sewing with antique sewing machines. Just inside the main entrance are incredible statures of Hindu deities but the best of all is just inside the west wall (eg the one as you enter from the main temple east gate) - the marriage of Sundareshvara (Shiva) and Minakshi (Devi) with Vishnu in attendance. Beautiful - one of the best and most sensitive sculptures in Madurai. Just outside the east entrance is a wonderful Nandi. An absolute MUST if you visit Madurai.
