I had been wanting to rent from Peconic Paddlers for awhile now & I’m very glad I had the opportunity to do so today. I had trouble reaching them by phone & the website didn’t offer much description of their river trips BUT the staff members were so nice & patient once we arrived. You do not need to reserve ahead. I was there on Labor Day weekend during perfect weather & there were plenty of water crafts available. We rented 2 SUPs & 1 single kayak. We headed upstream to Roadhouse Pizza, where we beached our boats & ate before heading back. We were out about 3-4 hours but they only charged us for 2. We went really slow, stopping a lot to wade & let the kids play. We saw lots of eels & fish & there are river otters around (we saw one later on a few miles north at a parking area on the Peconic). There is very little current, so it’s a relaxing trip. The river is pretty wide except for a couple of spots where you need to steer around fallen trees or under weeping willows. It’s shallow so our 6 year old kept hopping off the board to play in the water. If you rent canoes they will shuttle you up 5 or 7 miles & you canoe back down to the shop. We want to do this trip soon since we will get to see so much more of the river.

When in Riverhead, take a tour with Brew Crew Cycles! It is the best way to pedal around the breweries of the East End of Long Island. The 14-person bikes make brewpub tours a group effort. During the 2-hour ride Brew Crew Cycles takes riders, as fast as they can pedal, to their next ice cold brew. This bike tour is a unique way to experience three local breweries.
