Far from the north coast resort towns, Kingston is Jamaica at its most authentic, a sprawling city of contrasts spread between the east coast and the Blue Mountains. Kingston's diversity is reflected in its disparate neighborhoods, from the wealthy northern suburbs to the less affluent downtown. Travelers can discover the spirit of One Love at the Bob Marley Museum, or sample delicious ice cream at Devon House. Nearby, the former capital of Spanish Town offers insight into the area's history.

We planned to take our first trip to Jamaica right before Christmas 2018, arriving on a Sunday evening. We realized that Dub Club only happens on Sundays, so once our luggage was stowed our receptionist called a taxi and we made our way along a steep and winding road up the side of the small mountain where Dub Club is perched. We arrived around 10 p.m., and the reggae music was being broadcast by several DJ's. Around the back of the DJ stage and tall speakers is a bar and store selling reggae-related items. The back area has tables and benches for folks to talk and rest after dancing to the music in the front area. It is highly likely that most of the customers are tourists, though from a large number of countries. The club is under the open sky, and offers a great view of Kingston down below. Marijuana is available and heavily used by a minority. Jerk chicken was being prepared next to the stairway leading down to the sound stage area. Overall the mood is calm and people can enjoy the music however they wish. Admission for us was US$7/person. We took our 13-year old son, who has high appreciation for reggae and (we think) has a mature view of drugs and their usage; there were no objections from the gate personnel having young folks in attendance. We would recommend that every visitor to this area of Jamaica pay a visit to Dub Club.
