Seisenryo is a unique destination and easily accessible by visitors from the Tokyo Metro region. The main lodge, and more recent annex, were built there by American educator and rural development pioneer Paul Rusch in the 1930s, but really flourishing in the 1960s and 70s. Paul had an eventful career from his early days fund-raising for rebuilding schools and hospitals after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, to serving with Douglas MacArthur in the Occupation. But his life work was creating a vigorous farm community in the Kiyosato area, funded by generous donations from America, and visitors to the farm, the shops, the lodges and the restaurant can enjoy a 3-star experience, enhanced by the fine kitchen service in the restaurants - specializing in "Kogen yasai" and other local treats. Be sure to stop in at the Japanese Football Hall of Fame on the grounds, attached to Paul's own home, which has been nicely preserved, a bit of Americana. (You may notice some of the green John Deere farm tractors at the farms - the CEO and his wife were generous donors!)
