This restaurant is in the Pacific Gardens Hotel just a bit north of town. I live in the compound and come here a lot for convenience. Overall, the restaurant can be seen as pretty similar to the one at the Bird of Paradise, although it may be slipping behind as the Bird improves. The eating area is nice, open and located by a jungle creek (from the restaurant, you can't see all the rubbish in the creek). Downstairs has a bar frequented by residents and a large area for events. The staff are very nice and reasonably good, but can take a while to do anything. There is also a ridiculous absence of change in the till, such that staff have to go off for ages looking for 1 kina. They do accept credit cards though. The food is very average, but reliable. Pizzas are the usual PNG style - good toppings but doughy undercooked bases. The K30 small makes a good single meal while the K50 large could feed 3-4 people. They have a few full meals in the K40-60 range like chicken, steak and fish that are fairly good for PNG (even the steaks are edible) and come with choices of vegetables, chips, salad, mash, etc. The burgers are basic (the vege burger probably the best) are are now K25 with compulsory soggy chips. There is a large mid-priced Asian menu but I've never been at all impressed with those dishes - very bland, make sure to ask for extra chilli. There are few snack or light meal options below the burgers and Asian dishes, which is a problem (the satay sticks are great but not much for K18, similarly you get just 3 small spring rolls for K15). Not much for vegetarians either, just pizza, the vege burger, or some of the Asian dishes.Breakfast has typical egg and meat dishes of varying quality, about K47 for a big breakfast plus a pot of coffee. So just your typical PNG hotel restaurant. The Bird of Paradise has a new chef and is improving their dishes, so I think it's also time for a change at Pacific Gardens.

We stopped by to check out what had been a grand dining destination of our parents during our youth. There was a meeting going on in the front veranda which we sat away from near the bar. Unfortunately, the service was lack lusture and beer barely cool. Felt that we were in the way. Shame because the grounds are beautiful...Hi Ma'am, we sincerely apologize for this below average experience that you had. We would really like to make it up to you so please let us know the next time you're in town. I am guessing that you were part of a very large group that turned up out of the blue on a week day recently. We have only just very recently opened up the restaurant for week day lunches, and we have minimal staff on during week days unless we have big groups which have made bookings in advance (because we're a little out of town we don't get much foot traffic). So, we're sorry if you weren't properly attended to like we should have. We are still going through the process of upgrades, staff training & recruitment plus various business start-up phases, so we hope you can understand that we are on the path of improvement and we do value your feedback.

The room in the Rabaul Hotel is great, with a mix of Chinese, local, and colonial decor. The food's ordinary, though. My fish in black bean was smothered in soy sauce and not much else in the way of flavour, and the battered fish pieces seemed very overcooked. The K38 small dishes are modest but fine with rice and spring rolls. Then they slap 10% GST on top so you end up paying over K80, then they don't have any coins so they won't give you all your change. Still, I guess it's an alternative to all the wonderful fish dishes in the area...

Half the reason we travel to Nusa is to eat the food which is second-to-none. They do an amazing mudcrab and whole fish that's caught that day. So good. HI Maeve,Thanks for your kind review. We often get told that one of the main reasons people choose to stay with us is because of our restaurant, and I'm pleased to hear this is continuously the case. The mud crab is always a guest favourite, and we're very lucky to have fresh fish supplied to us regularly. Hopefully it's not too long in between meals that you can make it back!
