The Luttrell Arms

The Luttrell Arms is a 3 star, 28 room hotel. Set in the medieval village of Dunster with its many interesting buildings, a short walk from the famous Dunster Castle and within the Exmoor National Park. The privately owned 14th century Luttrell Arms is surrounded by beautiful countryside making it the ideal destination for that weekend break or midweek getaway. Stroll around the village, walk the moor, or just sit by a log fire in a building where hospitality has been a way of life for hundreds of years. Heritage "If you could bottle the air in the bar at the Luttrell Arms and sell it you'd clean up" so wrote a local journalist. The smell of logs burning on the fire, a hint of hops from the pints of ale, add to this the smell of something aromatic being cooked in the kitchen, and the most essential element - the smell of history, it oozes out of the walls which have stood for 800 years. There are many outstanding architectural features, the medieval hall with its hammer beam roof (room 17) and twelve light window. History seeps out of the blackened frames, which had their glass rattled loose as Cromwell’s gunners laid siege to Dunster Castle from a defended strong point at the end of the garden. Cromwell’s Commander, Col. Robert Blake walked the corridors of the hotel, it was then called the Ship Inn and was used as his headquarters throughout the siege of the castle. Also of note is some very fine plasterwork on the ceiling of the lounge downstairs, and the plaster over mantle in room 12, showing Actaeon being devoured by hounds. The Arms of Luttrell that we use today carry us back to a Gentleman of 1261, the crest takes us only back to 1621, but the supporters are directly derived from one of the Barons who coerced King John into sealing Magna Carta. A more modern visitor is Hercule Poirot. In "The Cornish Mystery" he confronts the murderer in one of the hotel’s bedrooms.

Great location, old-fashioned hotel

Reviewed By ElnaKristina

We really enjoyed our stay in Dunster, it is charming. The hotel is right in the centre of the village, just a few minutes walk from the castle. It was easy to get there by public transport, the walk from the bus stop was 5-10 minutes, and buses are fairly frequent except on Sundays. The location is also great for hiking. The hotel was old-fashioned, but clean and comfortable. Some parts of it felt a bit gloomy and could do with new curtains etc, but over all it was nice. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and had a lovely view of the castle, but if you have mobility problems, make sure you mention it when booking, as our room was through several turns, stairs and corridors, a bit of a maze to get there. The breakfast was fairly standard, including English breakfast, they should serve better quality orange juice, and I would have liked mushrooms with the hot food, but over all okay. We ate dinner at the hotel, as other options in Dunster were limited. I understood that the chef was fairly new. The food was plain, but over all well cooked. In general I find classic British food a bit bland, and this was no exception, but for what it was, it was good, although a little over priced. The fish was nice, and the cooked vegetables were not overboiled, but nice and crispy. We especially enjoyed the desserts, the salted caramel chocolate tart was delicious.

We enjoyed the atmosphere of the cottage, breakfast was wonderful and the hostess was very friendly. We like the creaky floorboards and the wood burner and the location was in a sweet village. Parking on the 2nd night was on the street which was handy too, would like to revisit sometime

Dunster Mill House

Dunster Mill House is situated on the banks of the River Avill and is next to a fully restored and working water mill. Built in 1756 the house has recently been refurbished to a very high standard and provides all the comforts you would expect from a quality hotel at B&B prices, however we have tried to retain the old world charm and atmosphere that Dunster is famous for. It is just a 10min stroll into the village where there are plenty of gift shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful Bed & Breakfast and we are sure you will have a very pleasant stay Your hosts Karen & Pete IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We can provide on site parking for all rooms free of charge between 6pm and 10am. Unfortunately we cannot accommodated children under 3 yrs old.

Old Priory at Dunster

A time capsule

Reviewed By ralphy12

We discovered old priory self catering cottage, and new we just had to stay there. 20 years later, we have made it. To be able to stay in somewhere this old and historic is fabulous. Jane is a great host. The cottage dates back to 1200s, yes it's old but that's what the charm is. Cosy and comfortable, but expect quirky corners, sloping floors antique furniture you'd expect to find in grannies attic and floorboards to die for. Lovely and warm, comfortable beds. Close to everything in Dunster, lots of walks on the doorstep, and Dunster castle 10min walk away. The priory cottage garden is beautiful packed full of flowers ,trees and hidden areas to sit and listen to the birds. The church which is attached chimes every hour and has a carillon every 4hours. If you want contemporary, sleek sparkling lines, then this isn't for you. If you want a slice of history, peacefulness then you have it in abundance.
