We rang and booked but when we got there “upgraded” after seeing our room. We paid top price for a room with cobwebs in the corner and the carpet square under the bed filthy. The sheets were no longer white and were crumpled.... no crisp white sheets here, so left doubt as to how they were laundered. Have stayed at cheaper establishments that have been cleaner. The person at reception needs to learn a bit about customer service as every time he was serving he was busy on his mobile phone and you were given secondary attention. I am sure there are other places in Castlemaine better and will not be returning to this motel in future.

I was most pleasantly surprised at how lovely my room was during our stay. It was a room with a double bed and a separate room with two singles. The rooms have been updated with all new furnishings and appliances , the bathroom was also big and spacious. Everything was spotlessly clean. Rooms were bright and airy, with great heating and crisp bed linen. The owners were welcoming and helpful. I would definitely come back to stay again, great value for money and a really central location. A pleasant home away from home experience.

The Northern Arts Hotel dates back to the 1870s but was substantially added to in 1939 and again in 2013. The result is a fascinating blend of the gold mining era and Art Deco. Seven rooms have private bathrooms (five as ensuites), and two share the same bathroom. Each features top of the line beds and linen, antique furnishings, Persian rugs and original artworks. Located one kilometre North of the Castlemaine Post Office on Barker St, on the corner of Wimble and Barker St, opposite Top End service station, the rooms are light-filled and enchanting. The venue offers a delightful intimate salon-style performance space, The Coolroom which is well known for jazz, spoken word and film events.
Northern Arts Hotel is an excellent place to stay in historic Castlemaine. The owner, Maggie, has created a quirky, interesting, friendly and warm place to stay. Go on a Sunday and you’ll be able to grab a glass of wine and see her film of the week which is shown in the lounge for locals and guests. When we were there Maggie introduced the film and then facilitated a lively discussion after it. The hotel is around the corner from the Mill and is a 15 minute stroll into town.

This is certainly a great place to stay, it is so comfortable and close to all the shops that Castlemaine has to offer. It is so well run from the time we contacted them to book to the time that we checked out we had such an easy time of it and that this shows that it is a well run operation. I would highly recommend that this is the place to stay.

Reasonable rates, quiet, easy to locate, not far from shops & restaurants . Friendly hosts. Clean cabin with all amenities we require. Car spaces are a little on the tight side, wouldn’t want to have a large vehicle.

I had realistic expectations of staying in a guesthouse/hostel and was feeling pretty confronted upon arrival that the place seemed quite dilapidated and the overpowering smell that met us at the door changed to a whole other unpleasantness when we entered the accommodation floor. The decaying state of the place was more alarming than charming and it actually felt dangerous as I watched the access stairs move as we were shown up. Despite the kitchen and bathrooms looking tidy in every respect the overpowering smell made us extremely dubious of using them. We went to the local supermarket to buy our own cups and utensils as well as lavender oil spray to try and fight the smell that was making us feel nauseous. We declined the offer of a cooked breakfast and the breakfast provisions were very stale looking and unappetising. Now I’m no snowflake, I’ve travelled the world on the cheap and this was probably the most confronting stay I have experienced as far as hygiene and safety is concerned. Trevor, the owner, is very hospitable but being quite elderly, seems oblivious to the conditions he imposes on the guests. Additionally, there is no card facilities so you have to go to town to get cash and then the supermarket to get it broken down as atm’s don’t give out $5’s. The room was large but full of bits and pieces that felt more awkward…like staying in a strangers personal bedroom rather than quaint or boutique. I wouldn’t stay here or recommend it and the other guests that were staying said the same thing. We were all taken aback by the same issues but in a funny way it gave us a common ground and a reason to mingle and laugh.
