If you enjoy coastal walks the Sheep’s Head way Loop Walks are great, but be aware that the loop walks are not an easy stroll! We spent 5 nights in a cottage just outside Kilcrohane, which was a great location for accessing several of the loop walks. We did one each day over 4 days: Lighthouse Loop Caher Loop Farranamanagh Loop Cahergal Loop They were all easy to navigate thanks to the maps at the car parks and regular way markers. There is lots of history on the Sheep’s Head and the scenery is beautiful. We were there during October 2020 and were very lucky with the weather, however the routes were wet and boggy. Don’t attempt the loop walks without walking boots, outdoor clothing, food and water. Published predicted walking times are based on 3km/hour but with the rough terrain and taking a couple of 15min breaks, we were doing about 2km/hour, meaning a 3 hour walk was taking us 4.5 hours. Congratulations to everyone involved in the walking routes, it was a pleasure to be able to enjoy access across the land and by following the signage it was reassuring that we weren’t venturing where we shouldn’t have.

Great trail. Some parts of the southern section can be really challenging. I used an app called Hiiker to do it, which was pretty much a 100% necessity as some sections there is little or no signage and it can get a bit confusing. The book is also good. I camped a lot of the Way by asking permission of farmers (mostly ????). I think you need a top-notch tent to do it. I have a Zpacks Duplex tent, and you need that level and quality of waterproofing. I had a groundsheet as well that was a necessity. I used a combination of gators and trail runners, but I was happy enough to get my feet wet in places. I feel like I got pretty lucky with the weather for the most part but equally, I experience the 4-seasons in a day weather the odd time!
