Things to do in Sainte-Croix
We had intended to eat at the buvette Le Sollier, also above Ste Croix and higher up the mountain, but off the same narrow road. However, they had a big party arriving and said they could not accommodate us, so we found this place off the fork in the road lower down, which was practically deserted. The food was not as good as at Le Sollier, but it was pleasant sitting outside and admiring the spectacular view, with the tinkling cowbells from the meadows behind us. Both of these restaurants are hardly ever frequented by tourists, because they are well off the beaten track and the road up to them is not for the faint-hearted (narrow, steep, winding, few passing places and plenty of cows wandering freely). However, locals do make their way up here and so do mountain hikers and it's well worth the effort. There isn't a huge choice but all the Swiss traditional cheese and ham dishes are on the menu and the price is better than in many town restaurants. Just getting there is an experience in itself. It's only worth attempting on a fine day, as a lot of the charm is in the views and having trails close by if you feel like a mountain stroll.

The «Belle Ãpoque» restaurant is full of period architectural features dating back to when it was built in 1913, such as parquet floors, pillars and large chandeliers⦠The terrace has recently been completely renovated and enjoys exceptional panoramic vie

A lovely little restaurant to discover. One large table with eight seats around so you all sit together. Food is home cooked simple but delicious. A menu is offered which is very reasonable, or à la carte which is also low prices and good food. No alcohol.

This is a restaurant frequented by locals and mountain hikers. It's about an hour and a quarter's hike from Ste Croix, or you can drive up the narrow, twisting road that leads to it through cow pastures with very few passing places, so not for the faint-hearted. The restaurant has no electricity and part of its charm is that it's quite primitive and serves only a limited range of traditional Swiss food, but that food is good. The fondue and rosti are both excellent choices and don't cost an arm and a leg, but you will have to buy a drink as there is no tap water. We spent around 50 francs for a lunch for two (no starter or dessert), which in Swiss terms is not bad. We go every time we visit Switzerland, and the last time we made the trek up there was a disappointment because they were fully booked with a big party about to arrive. We felt that they were rather brusque and not very helpful - the place was deserted when we arrived (around 11:30) and we thought that perhaps they could fit us in before the party arrived, but they were adamant that they couldn't. We ended up going to a restaurant lower down the mountain, which wasn't as good, so in future we'll phone and book (they have a Facebook page with details of when they're open etc. - they only open during the summer months as it's probably impassable in winter). There are donkeys and cows in the surrounding pasture, and paths criss-crossing the meadows above the restaurant, which is probably where a lot of the clientele arrives from. I only know about this restaurant because I have family in Switzerland and they introduced me to it many years ago. The drive up there is rather nerve-wracking, but if you're up for an adventure then this is worth the effort - however, pick a fine day, as it can be cold and misty up there in the clouds (even in summer) and a lot of the charm is in the view.

If you have friends with children you only like chicken nugget and pizza, well we suggested to the children would they like to make they own nuggets they looked a bit perplex but finally said yes. So we order a fondue Bresanne ( you dip the chicken in egg mixture then into a plate of bread crumbs then fry them in the fondue pot) comes with 5 different dips and ketchup and chips , the children love it and told they parents they want to come again, the parents ended up so relax and also want to come again to try other thing on the menu ,we been many times and never had a bad meal, lovely service and very friendly , prices reasonable to swiss standard .very rural

After a hike we stopped in Sainte Croix quite late for lunch (14:30-15:00). We found Cafe 21 to be open - a good start.Excellent choice of artisan beers. We were at the end of lunch time so without menus the waitress told us the meals left and number of portions available. We made two great choices in lasagna and fondue. Being there with a local he attested to the quality of the fondue.A great surprise meal. Excellent quality, good portions, friendly staff and the bar for beers. Warmed all our bellies on a cold day.
