Driving along the road amid mountains and water, and all of a sudden come to Carcross Desert which is a huge "sandbox", with very fine sand, Good place to stop and get out to stretch and walk in the sand, there is a lot of it.

This place is awesome! I’ve been stopping here for decades, I’m a tour guide from Skagway. Ron is a hoot, super nice guy. Be sure to ask him if he wants to sell the antique stuff, he loves that. Kinda worried (more than kinda) about the 2020 season. It looks grim for everyone. Particularly for me, finally ready to sell Ron my ‘98 Toyota Tacoma, that he’s wanted for years. Ron? Ron?? —sigh.

How nice to find a visitor centre with nice staff who actually want to help visitors with words instead of just pointing at racks of leaflets get your passport stamped and sign the visitors book

Art House Carcross features Yukon artists with national and international reputations. Practicing artists work on site, engaging curious visitors in far-reaching conversations surrounded by diverse and contemporary local artworks. Technology enables people to contact the artists and their galleries after their bus, train, or car leaves the station.

First, visiting the old train depot is worth the stop in itself, but add the Old General Store across the street with the best “freshly made waffle cones” with your favorite ice cream and you’ve made an even greater choice. Just a few steps away is a village of stores/shops featuring many great Alaskan craftsman as well as great food/drink choices - and a great restaurant (Bistro) too. I sampled popcorn, ice cream, food at the Bistro, bakery items all while visiting the various artisians booths. This will be a regular stop for me anytime I’m traveling from Skagway to Whitehorse or even as a destination to turn around if I don’t have time to go all the way to Whitehorse.
