Milles Fountain

Located across from historic Union Station, this magnificent fountain and sculpture represents the meeting of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.

Reviewed By 866TaylorB - Chicago, United States

The Milles Fountain that dominates Aloe Plaza in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, is an extraordinary example of sculptural craftsmanship. Located in the 1800 block of Market Street, across the street from historic Union Station, the fountain was designed and constructed by Swedish-born sculptor Carl Milles, who was a pupil of Auguste Rodin. Originally called "Wedding of the Rivers," it was completed in 1939 and dedicated in 1940. Lighting and landscaping were added in 1954. It was declared a St. Louis Landmark in 1971. The fountain represents the coming together of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. They are represented by two central figures, one male (Mississippi) standing on a catfish and one female (Missouri) standing on a shell, with 17 water spirits forming a wedding procession, symbolic of the smaller streams that empty into the two major rivers. In addition, there are 14 bronze statues that celebrate the meeting of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. In defense of criticism arising over the nudity of the male figure, the fountain's name was changed to "Meeting of the Waters." It was envisioned to be the centerpiece of Aloe Plaza, a 3.35-acre urban park that was created in 1931. Part of the Terminus section of the St. Louis Gateway Mall, it is two blocks in size and is bounded by Market, Chestnut, 18th and 20th Streets, in front of Union Station.
