Alaska is divided into five regions: far north, interior, southwest, south central, and inside passage. Although it takes a long time to see the entire state, you can travel through the regions by boat, car, bus, or plane. Hike through the mountains, or venture out on a deep sea fishing or whale watching excursion. Get in touch with nature by camping in the wilderness, or experience your preferred degree of class and luxury in the beautiful, active cities of Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The nation's largest national forest.
Went fishing, and flew over only a small part of the forest. Beautiful area. Highly recommended to get away from it all.

Loved this walk through the trees and on the beach, lots of hidden mining treasures along the path too

This 495,000-acre state park includes Flattop Mountain, the most climbed mountain in Alaska.
There are so many different and great hikes, trails, day-use areas, rivers, lakes, and such in Chugach State Park. There is something for everyone. Flattop Mountain is a fantastic hike. Thunderbird Falls is an easy hike in a different part of the park. There are nearly unlimited possibilities.

So the center was closed but the paths were open. They are nice paths with good information signs along the way.

My work takes me to some unexpected places, Tongass National Forest in Juneau, Alaska is one of these. Its grandeur is incredible, being the single largest national forest in the US. Dotted with cabins that can be booked and many camping areas, we stayed in a log cabin on Turner Lake West. There are many walking treks and the cabin has a proper jetty for arriving by seaplane and motorboat. Our cabin was a chalet-style wooden cabin, with basic amenities: a fireplace, 4 beds (2 doubles, 2 single), table and bench, places to keep food and an outdoor toilet. Like all these cabins, you basically need to bring everything else that you need with you but it is truly worth the experience just to get away from civilization. Our cabin was literally on West Turner Lake, which is absolutely great for trout and salmon fishing. The area has abundant wildlife and this does include the occasional grizzly and black bears (we didn't see any). Birds are plentiful and the lake has a variety of waterfowl. the scenery of the mountains and cascading waterfalls just add to the ambiance. The best thing about this experience is just the incredible sense of tranquility and the feeling with one with nature you will have. This alone makes it well worthwhile leaving our comforts behind. This experience is truly priceless and can not be replicated easily at a five-star resort.
