It is the second largest state by land area, with 47,624 square kilometres (18,388 sq mi), and fourth largest in population (7.9 million) among the sixteen Länder federated as the Federal Republic of Germany. When the Gales of November come early the North Sea is no place for weak stomachs or land lovers. If you can deal with the elements of wet, wind, waves and wildlife you'll get more than a ferry ride, you'll get a travel story to talk about at the holiday dinner table. My November Ferry left at 10:30 am From Cuxhaven to Heliogoland, The return ferry was at 1600 but I choose to return on the next day's boat at 4pm or 1600 hrs. this gave me 27 hours on this remarkable Island.I would recommend staying 2 nights. My fare was 52 Euros roundtrip. There is food cooked on board and offered at reasonable prices. My trip over was enjoyable but the next day the after affects of a storm at sea made for a most exciting and exhilarating experience. As soon as we left the walled safety harbor of Heliogoland the sides of our little vessel were battered by the north sea white caps. As the good ship "Heliogoland" was laid up for winter maintenance we had to sail on the "funny Girl" a smaller but sturdy vessel. We rocked and rolled the whole way. I took my spot on the stern to enjoy the show but was joined only by the few smokers aboard ship.Passengers were not permitted on the bow for safety reasons. The 2.5 hour ride was accompanied by splashes of salty sea each time the bow broke through a wave and a continuous salt filled blast on my face made the voyage more of a thrill ride than a routine ferry trip. If rough seas are not your thing then book your trip in the fair weather months, but put this on your bucket list and.book your trip. Travel Tip: There is a luggage service that will pick up your bags in Heligoland and take them to your hotel for 5 euros which enables you to enjoy the island from the minute you land. the same service will pick up those bags and put them aboard ship when you depart so you don't have to lug bags with you after you check out of the hotel-great idea.
