There's a bit in "Asterix in Britain" where Obelix is presented with his first meal of wild boar in a British inn: "But boiled with mint sauce, Asterix...the poor thing!"I felt much the same thing for the animals that had been needlessly slaughtered to provide me with my lunch at l'Ateapick today.Let us start with the positives: it is a very nicely decorated restaurant, albeit located in a former organic supermarket in an unpreposessing industrial zone just behind the Hyper U in Fontenay le Comte. The bar is well stocked and the staff plentiful, if not altogether effective. The loos are confusing. I won't say more than that - go and see for yourselves if the rest of this review doesn't put you off too much.End of positive bit.In a big city - London, Paris, New York, etc - it is probably possible for a nicely presented restaurant to serve poor food if it is properly fashionable. In rural France what goes on the plate is rather more important: around here people don't have the money to fritter away.We took the menu du jour. This is normally the best idea when dining in a new restaurant for the first time, a chance for the kitchen to show what it is made of. Oh dear. Our starter was a "gateau of chicken livers" with fired chicken gizzards. The gizzards were fine, but the "gateau" was dry and unappetising. My companion pronounced it inedible. This dish should never have left the kitchen. The main of spatchcock quail with curry spices was insipid. It was served with slightly burnt sauté potatoes, some things that might have been mushrooms and a pile of boiled celery. The pudding of the day was crème caramel. This might have been homemade, but tasted no better than a packet mix. It was garnished with stale nuts.To be fair, the wine was good and not overpriced for the quality. However, I question why when so much money has clearly been spent on making the interior of this restaurant so appealing why more attention is not being focussed on the stuff on the plates? That said, l'Ateapick was busy today. Perhaps this is the novelty value. It will be interesting to see how busy it is in three months time.

Having been here before last summer, we were at a loss as to where to go and decided to pop in. Tried it again, and were bitterly disappointed. Service was very slow. Veal escalope with masala wine was horrible.. sweet and almost sugar like. Pasta was served as it came out of the pan, no butter, no oil, no seasoning .. bland and uninteresting both to look at and to taste. It was to be fair changed for another dish of veal with a "tomato sauce", which was probably just tinned tomatoes, thrown over the veal. Again, not at all pleasant. Puddings were quite reasonable, and coffee excellent. A glass of wine was something in the region of 5 euros, and was mediocre in the extreme. It was busy when we left (having been fairly empty at the beginning of our meal). Most of the dishes going out from the kitchen which was visible from the restaurant were pizzas, which looked good. So, its probably just a pizza place, with a few rather inadequate dishes thrown in to boost the menu. It is sad, because we thought it was okay for a quite drop in meal. Not really so. Probably good for families and kids who want pizzas. Certainly the French youngsters who were there were impeccably behaved, all waiting until the final pizza was served before touching theirs, and all drinking non alcoholic drinks. This was an absolute pleasure to see... well mannered and courteous young people sitting down for a civilized meal. No loud shouting and coarse behaviour, just thoroughly well mannered young adults. Says something about the way the French bring up their youngsters. But all round a disappointment for us.

An unexpected PLEASANT experience in a town which did not seem to offer much from a food perspective. La Pizzeria offered nice Italian food for very good value. The restaurant is located in the main street which is very easy to access. The restaurant is hosted in an old building which is extremely charming. [Have a look upstairs, the 1st floor room is absolutely splendid]. The owner was friendly and talkative. It is highly recommended as well if you have kids.

Chose from the Menu de Marche (2 courses for 22â¬). Food was nicely presented and served after only a shortish wait. Flavours of the principal ingredients (Faux Filet & Dos de Lieu) were ok but lacked depth. Side dishes of accompanying sauces were good and helped improve matters. Desserts were competent but again lacked anything to make them stand out. Nothing wrong with what was presented and certainly nothing to complain about. The restaurant has real scope to improve given it has a good foundation to build on. Decent wine/drinks choices in all manner of quantities (25cl & 50cl pichers and good choice of 1/2 bottles of wine ).Thank you for your return, your opinion is precious to be able to improve.Matthias.

We had a lovely lunch here. It was amazingly busy and important to book. It seemed to take a while to get served but once we had placed our order it the service was very smooth. We all went for the set menu and had the steak which was beautifully booked.Merci

We tried this restaurant which has changed hands since our last visit, and were really very disappointed. We visited for dinner, having reserved. On arrival at 7.30pm we were the only people in the restaurant and a young man was at reception. We sat at the table for a considerably time, without being offered a drink, being brought the menu or receiving any attention at all. The young man vanished into the kitchen .. Eventually, and it was eventually he appeared again and presented us with the menu. This was nothing exciting. The fact that we cannot remember what we ate that evening speaks for itself. Suffice it to say that the cost of the meal was over one hundred euros for two people. The service (and eventually one other couple came into the restaurant) was abysmal. There was absolutely no pressure on either the kitchen or the young man serving, and still the wait was ridiculous. We were there for about two hours for three courses all of which were totally unmemorable. Sorry, but we will not be returning. Such a pity because Fontenay sorely needs a good restaurant.

Returning again and again to enjoy the very best of French cuisine prepared and served with great care and attention to flavour, presentation and content. A hidden gem of a place extremely well run with very reliable consistent standards of food and service delivering at an affordable price an elegant table dâhote menu. The VERY best around.
