Nestled in the heart of the Green Mountains, this former iron-mining town today is the quintessential Vermont getaway, complete with a white steeple church, antique shops and cozy country inns. Manchester is a true all-season destination. In winter, skiers arrive to hit the downhill slopes at nearby Bromley and Stratton Mountains or the cross-country trails at Hildene. Spring and summer bring hikers who can opt for easy treks through Merrick Forest or more challenging ones like Prospect Rock, a three-mile hike, mostly uphill, that offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains as reward to those who make it. Manchester fly-fishing is also a popular pastime, drawing enthusiasts from around the country who come to learn or hone their skills. Big name outlet stores in Manchester Center draw shoppers year-round. In the fall, it's all about foliage. Enjoy the vibrant colors from a canoe on the mighty Battenkill River, a bicycle along a scenic path or kick back and take it all in from a comfy rocking chair on the porch of a historic inn. No matter what your vantage point, the show is always spectacular.

Have tried breakfast and lunch at the latest incarnation of restaurant at the Northshire bookstore. The lunch menu is a definite uptick with more interesting salads and soups than before. The breakfast menu is a step down. Basically egg and cheese sandwiches or pastries. Given the simplicity of the breakfast menu you would think service would be better. Sadly it is not. Slow and spotty. Honestly, there are better to-go egg sandwiches in the area. Lunch offers some new twists like a curry noodle soup but it is the third best curry in Manchester Vermont. Yes, even in this relatively quiet corner of Vermont there is a great Thai restaurant across the street and a Burmese place across from Shaw's. Both significantly better. Final word - if you are shopping for books or need a place to sit and work for a while the location can't be beat. If you are on the hunt for a nice meal try some of Manchester or Dorset's other great spots.
just went to Charlie's Coffee House which has been open only a few months. Great coffee in several varieties from a local roaster. Wide variety of pastries and offering a light lunch - sandwiches, salads, home made hot soup.Try it, you will like it.

A little more expensive then I would like to pay for breakfast but thatâs my only complaint the waitress was really friendly and the food was good. I had the breakfast sampler which was a good portion of food. My mother had the scrambler omelet and enjoyed it.

The Mystic Cafe is the kind of exceptional experience I hope to find in small town America but rarely do... Inventive and thoughtful dishes that go far beyond the traditional New England fare for flavor and interest. That said, this is not a quirky niche dining experience just for foodies - - - there's plenty here to satisfy any palate. We stumbled on this cafe by (lucky) accident, but I will head straight for the Mystic Cafe on my next trip to Manchester.

The Little Rooster Cafe is small, but the food is fantastic. In all the years we have been going to VT, this was the first time we had tried eating here - 7/19. Great, bring your appetite. Clean and very cute. The staff really works hard to provide a quality menu with some unique ingredient combinations as well as some of the traditional choices. We are so glad that you had a great experience and would definitely be delighted to have you return. Thanks for your vote of approval.

Large menu of eggs, omelettes, scrambles, pancakes, Benedictâs. Good Food, but didnât like the thick slices of French bread toast instead of regular bread. I got the turkey hash and it was a little salty. The breakfast potatoes were crispy and delicious. The scones were okay, but not as good as they looked. The room is very small and limited space to wait. Server very friendly and patient despite how busy they were. Very popular place. Only serves breakfast until 12:30 pm and take checks or cash, no credit cards.
