To effect and encourage preservation, restoration, and appropriate presentation of the town of Edenton and Chowan county, as a historic, educational and aesthetic place, to the benefit of the citizens of the place, and the state and of visitors!
If you've never been to Edenton, I highly suggest stopping by the Penelope Barker House and getting tickets for the Trolley tour. There is so much history in this little town and the guides in both the Welcome Center and Trolley were so sweet and knowledgable!

If you are with children there is a fantastic playground and play area within the area. Otherwise there are benches and kayaks that are available to take in the many sites within the park.

Historic Edenton State Historic Site is a North Carolina State Historic Site and offers a wide range of tours of the historic district of Edenton, N.C. Our site includes: the Historic Edenton Visitor Center complete with exhibits, orientation film, information, and restrooms; the 1800/1827 James Iredell House, the home of one of the justices of the first U.S. Supreme Court; the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse, the most intact and longest running Colonial American Courthouses; and the 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse, one of the few remaining screw-pile lighthouses in the United States. We also provide tours of the 1758 Cupola House, the 1736 St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and walking tours on the life of Harriet Jacobs, who was born into slavery in Edenton, but escaped on the Maritime Underground Railroad and became an authour and abolitionist.
I really like this town! It is full of NC and indeed US history, dozens of restored and lived in homes of all shapes and sizes, from an 1810 mansion lived in continuously by nine generations of one family to restored mill houses now home to retirees and young families, great old churches--don't miss Kadesh and St. Paul's--.a very cool and lively main street, a beautiful riverfront with a rare lighthouse, and more characters than Savannah, I think. It's friendly, outward gazing, and just beautiful, even on the hottest days of summer. Take a break and visit. You'll be happy you did!
