Stayed at this ryokan in August. We came after two weeks of seeing many temples and castles, in almost tropical heat, in Tokyo and Kyoto and a number of places in between. So we needed the rest. The combination of the great ontsens, fantastic service and great food did the trick. It was a wonderful experience. My son and I stayed for two nights. We wore only the comfortable yukatas and went together to a private family ontsen which you can reserve (at no additional cost) for 45 minutes at a time. The price is high (one night came to over 50 thousand yen). We had a comfortable room, but without a private ontsen bath, either inside or outside. But when you count in the culinary experience, it was definitely worth it! Dinners come in 10 courses.. the second dinner had the famous Japanese shabu-shabu barbecue as the main course. We tried it before in a restaurant in Kyoto; definitely a highlight. You briefly boil raw beef or pork and lots of vegetables in water, then dip in a peanut or vinegar/soy sauce and eat. Heavenly! Sanso Tensui definitely gets huge thumbs up. Especially the very nice gentleman who spoke good English and took care of us all the time. Our friends and us seemed to be the only foreigners around. Most staff did not speak much English, but his English was very good. Heard a lot about ryokans before travelling to Japan. Now I can confirm, it is a very worthwhile experience!

The minute you walk in, you relinquish your shoes. Everywhere is tatami and so we walk in our socks or indoor shoes, an immediate plus and relaxing moment. Our room was called The Annex. It is apart from the hotel. The Annex is Japanese with tatami and western beds, very comfortable. When we approached the front door, the views off the private garden were gorgeously dramatic mountain cliffs and there are views of other mountains and the stream from the other side of The Annex as well. Spacious and open and extremely comfortable. While many rooms come with a private dining room in the restaurant, the private eating room associated with the Annex also has another private garden with views of the mountains. A small note: All liquids in the frig are complimentary, nice touch! The service was excellent, well trained. The food was delicious even though we have many dietary limits - like no meat, pork, heavy oils. They accommodated our restrictions with delicious, fresh fish and vegetables and fruit. The onsens, even though public access as well, were clean and designed beautifully. We've been to many ryokans this year, mainly in Kyushu since we live here. This onsen had the most beautiful facilities - and the views were drop dead gorgeous. My jaw literally dropped when I saw the view from the onsen with the lounge chairs in the steaming water - and what an amazing onsen that was!!! After much thought, the only downside is the outdoor tub in the Annex, which is really not an onsen since it used chlorinated water and the two of us had to squeeze in. Having said that, we already booked our next stay in the spring and cannot wait to return.

I stayed here for two days in December of 2019. Very clean, very quiet, and beautiful grounds. There was a river just outside my window with rapids for a gorgeous sound. The hot spring baths were hot and clean. Very nice. The staff were so incredibly polite and very patient with my lack of Japanese. The food was very good, too much for me actually. I would have happily stayed here a month!

The usual yukata and slippers and self serve amenities, but small touches like tiny cookies lovingly caressed by thin decorative paper in a glass jar (I didn't unscrew the little cap as they looked so cute), someone went to the trouble of placing a little rabbit sticker on the corner of the plastic bag containing a hair ties adorned with a pink plaid button, pink walls, slip in duvet sheets. Little whale stickers on the ground - big ones for bigs steps and small ones for small steps. Staff are absolutely lovely! Friendly, personable, great conversation with the barista/manager/general person who had great spoken English, other staff pretty good with combination of hand gestures and pointing and much smiling. Breakfast was good, open plan, with view of river, we didn't have dinner, but dining hall big with small areas divided for each group. In hotel Onsen was cute, inside and small outside option, with dry sauna Coffee/lounge area further past check in counter and in-house store - All day home make cookies of several varieties - 3pm onwards - speciality coffee being made to order Rest of the time, self serve Collection of vinyl albums and reading area, also desk area Beautiful to watch sunsetting Not much security to speak of, can enter in from porch, but small town feel, lady left her wallet on the table and left the area Only gripe was conditioning unit was dusty
