Famous for Bourbon Country and horse farms, civil war battlefields and beautiful natural parks, Kentucky offers a delightful mix of experiences. You might begin in Lexington, where the 1200-acre Kentucky Horse Park is a popular attraction. The university adds exciting sports, impressive art and a vibrant student/professor population to the city. Louisville is similar, where renowned Churchill Downs hosts the annual Kentucky Derby and the Belle of Louisville, the nation’s oldest steam-driven river paddlewheeler, hosts enchanting lunch and dinner cruises along the beautiful Ohio River. Next, head south to visit Mammoth Cave National Park for a day of touring the cave (the world’s longest known cave), hiking and canoeing on the Green River. Paducah, Berea, Bowling Green – so many places to explore and enjoy!

The only disappointment in our first trip to this latest state lodge was our having to leave so soon! When my husband left to start his business day, I climbed a frosted grass hill to have my prayer time by the big chimney! Listening to two consecutive sermons near the end of J. Piper’s Romans series, I enjoyed every step of the five miles of trails at this park! God never ceases to amaze me with his coordination of all my sensory experiences with prayer and His Word! In His natural setting here, He has thus far shown clear purposes in “His story”! The stewards of this park were so gracious to us. The gift shop attendant, group services administrator, concierge, house cleaning, and Illana, who enthusiastically facilitated my museum visit, were all so much a part of this precious “Sabbatical” that I pray they be blessed by knowing my LORD as I know Him!

Historic park that commemorates the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.
This is a must see if in this part of the country. Warning, it is out of the way. Only a couple of people can enter the small museum at once during COVID-19. They are very knowledgeable and there is a 28-minute movie that explains the battle in detail. This was the highwater mark for the confederacy. There are many walking trails and a three-mile driving tour that will give you a good overview.

I enjoy American History and Camp Nelson does have an interesting history from the time of the Civil War. In the past they have had re-enactments in September which can also be informative. The home that is there has a walking tour that shows life from the 1860s. And the museum has a small gift shop, a short movie and many displays to remind us of our heritage.

If you are looking to educate yourself about our American history and grab some exercise, go visit the Camp Wildcat Battlefield. It is beautiful year round and just 10 minutes from the interstate. Hiking Trails are just steps away from the self guided tour.

Turn on Tebbs Bend Road, stop at the first stop, a brochure is available on the front porch. The stops of interests are clearly marked. Historical markers. Plenty of area to get out and walk. Very informative and enjoyable at your own pace. Beautiful picturesque countryside. The driving tour consists of 13 stops.

I am local to the area and have been for 19 years. However, I had never made the trip to Mill Springs until a couple of weeks ago. My friend was in town from South Georgia and she wanted to do a little sightseeing and get to know the area. After stopping in at Haneys, we decided to take a look around here. We were there in the early afternoon on a Sunday and were the only ones there. We had the museum to ourselves and it was amazing! I am not a history person at all but I was very intrigued with this set up. All of the displays are great and have a lot of detail put into them. I am a visual person so I enjoyed actually seeing the displays. If you like to read, there is also plenty to read about. After the museum we watched a 15 minute video. It was a little too long for our taste but full of good information. The guy working told us about the 10 historic stops we could make. We decided to give it a try. The stops are spread across town and it takes a little bit to stop at each one. For me, it wasn’t ideal but my friend loved it. So if you are a big history buff, I recommend allowing time for this. You can see where a lot of historic events happened and buildings were. I would highly recommend this excursion! Very impressed!

The is the site of a Civil War battle. There were Kentuckians on both sides. It is a site where you pull off the road and read the signs documenting the battle and the soldiers that fought there. There is a short walking path (1/10 mile) with an additional informational sign or two. This is a 20 minute pull over sight, but very interesting,
