Muscat (Arabic: مسقط, Masqaṭ pronounced [ˈmasqatˤ]) is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Oman. It is also the seat of government and largest city in the Governorate of Muscat. Muscat is also considered as a Global City. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total population of Muscat Governorate reached 1.28 million as of September 2015. The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats. Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.

Do you remember any of Arabic fairy tales? If yes, then of course you've heard about magnificent Arabic forts ! So it's a high time for exploring Omani historical heritage. The Nizwa Fort is a 17th century castle inside the city of Nizwa, one of the country oldest cities and known as the Pearl of Islam. As well as its historical significance it does also act as a natural gateway to some of the highest and most majestic mountains, is a great vantage point for viewing of Hajar Mountains and surrounding town. Jabreen Castle ("the most beautiful historic castle in the whole of Oman "according to guidebooks) was built in the late 17th century. It used to serve at the same time as a military fort, as a school and as the place of residence of the sovereign of Oman, at the time where Jabreen was the capital city of Oman. The decorated windows and wooden balconies are an authentic expression of Omani craftsmanship. Excited? let's start our journey !

Oman has a lot to offer but it is way better with a story. Go with these guys and you’ll experience the real Arabia. These guys took me off before they officially started a tourist company. First in a boat trip. Awesome, fully serviced as well. The museums. And yes the are even better with a local to tell you the ins and outs. Can’t wait to come back and go in a desert trip with my Omani friends. Thanx guys. I’ll be back soon

Golden Highlands is a great company. As I live in Oman, I have first-hand experience of their service. I have participated in trips which Golden Highlands organized for individuals, small groups as well as larger groups. Of course, they know the places that are of interest for tourists, such as cultural highlights, nature, history,... But a unique feature of Golden Highlands is that they have hosted groups of international geologists and therefore are also familiar with the hidden gems of Oman's geology. And if you decide to use their "full package", you can enjoy the delicious food they cook. I can only recommend them.
Discover the history of Oman, visit Nizwa city, souk and on Friday the cattle market, the Bahla fortress and the Jibreen Castle.
