A group of friends meet there for a social visit arriving shortly after 5:00 PM. The place was empty, but as we ordered drinks it took half hour for 2 of us to get the piña coladas we order. It was not any better as the rest kept arriving. We order appetizers and food from the menu. After an hour of wait, we inquired and were told that most of the items are fried and they only have one fryer! We were the only ones in the place for the first hour. A couple came, sat order a drink and food. Fifteen minutes later they get their beer, but after an hour wait, they paid the beers and left. One of my friends have to order 4 different drinks before they were able to tell her they have it. After dinner some of us asked for coffee with milk. Another surprised! The coffee was on a regular cup, but just like a black pocillo and they gave us the Cremora cream powder to add instead of milk. At that point we paid our bill and walked to the plaza to order a decent cup of coffee. The ladies bathroom was not working. It was good we just went there to socialized with friends, otherwise it would had been a total disaster. The food was tasty, but the service needs to be desired. I believe it is poor management that could be corrected if they want to remain in business. We are sorry that you experience was not the best. Just to let you know, many of the things we did for your table were out of the menu, for example the piña coladas and the coffee in which we don't even serve coffee in the restaurant. Maybe the problem is that our concept is not the one you were hoping for. We as a restaurant specialize in craft beers and tapas. The average wait time for a main plate is 25-35 min, in which gives time for the client to clear their head, chat with his/her company and just have a pleasant time. So again we are sorry that you did not have the experience you hoped for. Maybe it will sound harsh but, we will not change our concept since our best customers already supports us 100%. If you would like to have a second chance, you are more that welcome.

This place offers a wide variety of food, inside/outside sitting, 2 big tv to watch sport, fast, friendly and courteous service and cold drinks. The food is excellent and I recommend the fish tacos if you like spicy food. If you go with small children, the outside sitting area is good for them because is wide and closed in so the kids will not run into the street. Friday's happy hour of a bucket of Coronita's at 5 x $5 is a hit for a group of friends. In general the place is perfect to spend time with friends or family.

SUMMATION: The food, service, and value were very good. The dirty and cramped tables were poor.GENERAL: I will not review all details since all Church’s are about the same and everybody knows their details. Church’s has 2 parts of its restaurant in the Mayaguez Mall: A full-sized restaurant near PR-2 and a small restaurant inside the main mall building. I am reviewing the small one.NAME: Church’s ChickenTITLE: “Good Fast Food” [Tripadvisor, review #80, 20 June 2014]TELEPHONES: (787) 833-4616, 832-4604WEB PAGE: http://churchspr.net [Church’s in general]SIZE: Small restaurant with 21 tables for 4 and two tables for 2.LOCALITY: Church’s Chicken, Food Court, Mayaguez Mall Shopping Center, PR 2, km 158.6, PR-343, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico 00681 [also listed as 00680 and 00682] [1]LATITUDE, LONGITUDE: 18°9'25"N, 67°8'43"W [larger restaurant]DIRECTIONS: in the Food Court of the Mayaguez Mall (western end)PARKING: ampleVIEW: rambling, rabid shoppers passing by in the hallAIR-CONDITIONED: comfortableOUTSIDE SEATING: There is no outside seating, but it is open to the Mall.DRINKS: They had diet 7up.MENU ITEMS: They have the usual chicken stuff, biscuits, tostones, [2] and shrimp, but no fish.BREAD: My Honey Biscuit was large and excellent. No crotons were provided for the salad.SALAD: My first Mate’s salad was large. It was covered in a generous amount of excellent, large cubes of chicken breast. The salad was mostly romaine lettuce with shredded, mild cheddar cheese, large tomato wedges, shredded carrot, and 3 thin rings of red onion. She could not eat all of it, but it came in its own “take home” container.ENTRÉE: My 8 medium, lightly breaded and fried shrimp were good and adequate. SIDES: My French Fries were ample and very good. One fry had been cooked twice, but not burned.CONDIMENTS: My Shrimp Sauce came in a small, plastic tub with a peal-off top. Its brown color indicated excess age, but seemed okay. It lacked any exceptional flavor. The sauce needed horseradish and lemon. My ketchup was in the usual packets. My First Mate’s salad dressing was in 2 one-ounce, small tubs. It was Honey French and excellent. However, it contained fructose, since she forgot to ask for diet dressing. SALT AND PEPPER: noneSERVING TIME: The service was relatively quick even though they were very busy, at 12:30 on a Tuesday, and the restaurant was almost full. At least they were not slowed with a drive through.CLEANESS: The tables were dirty and no one was cleaning them.COMPARISON: The shrimp were better than those at Pollo Tropical and Applebees [3] (and cheaper), but not as good as those at Longhorns, but much cheaper.PROBLEMS: Their chairs were uncomfortable and their tables were too crowded. Their shrimp sauce was so old that it had turned brown.NOISE LEVEL: oddly rather quiteENVIROMENTAL: They served paper glasses, plates, and containers, which was good, but a plastic salad container (just like everyone else), which was bad. They do not recycle and have no apparent conservation program.COMPARISONS: We prefer this chain for chicken [4].CONFUSION: There are 2 Church’s locations in the Mayaguez Mall. One is beside the northernmost entrance adjacent to PR-2 (you will see the sign from PR-2). It is a regular Church’s restaurant. We have been there many times and it is very good. The second one (which I am reviewing) is a smaller version inside the main mall building [5, 6]. RECOMMENDATIONS: You will probably not change your chairs or number of tables, since the public does not seem to care. However, you might wish to check your deteriorated shrimp sauce before you kill someone.HISTORY: We had never been to this restaurant before even though it has been here many years. FOOTNOTES:[1] Not all Church’s are the same. The one west of the University of Puerto Rico Campus, across PR-2 is so slow that we no longer go there.[2] Tostones are boiled, squashed, and fried patties of green plantain.[3] See my review “The Donner Party.”[4] Church’s serves better and more consistent chicken than most other local places, especially better than Kentucky Fried Chicken. However, many local chicken places are cheaper. The Best Fried Chicken in the World is served at a little, hole-in-the-wall place up in Maricao (just as you turn onto the last road to the Marico Fish Hatchery), Marico Fried Chicken. They do not serve coffee for lunch (in the middle of coffee country!).[5] Only people shopping in the mall will use the small Church’s. Travelers and tourists will use the larger one.[6] Google Maps list these as a single restaurant [Mayaguez III Church’s Chicken] in 2 adjacent locations. https://maps.google.com.pr/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=214207682041695150257.0004d2df54464451db472&dg=feature

Meson is popping up all over PR. I went with local friends the other night and was blown away by the variety and quality of this place. The sandwiches are superb, the price is right. You can sit down comfortably. This is a new star on the fast food scene. I also had the soup,a caldo gallego...to die for, authentic and definitely not out of a can. I willbe looking for the Mesones during my stay. They are alll over the island
