See a buffalo up close, live like a cowboy for a day on a working cattle ranch or visit a stagecoach stop on the Sante Fe Trail are just a few of the many vacation experiences possible in this state in America’s heartland. You’ll love the wide-open spaces and the opportunities to engage in a variety of one-of-a-kind experiences in this marvelous state, which has the largest segment of true tallgrass prairie remaining in the U.S. Regardless of where you visit: a major metropolitan area like Kansas City, a college town like Manhattan or Lawrence or engaging places like Wichita, Dodge City and Salina, there are a wide array of attractions and sights nearby. If you want to familiarize yourself with cowboy culture, visit the Boot Hills Museum in Dodge City, dine on all-you-can-eat barbeque and hear songs of the American Cowboy at Diamond W Chuckwagon Supper in Wichita or explore the Dickinson County Heritage Center in Abilene, which has dance halls, gaming rooms and 32 saloons.
For outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching and other activities, three of the state’s most popular parks are: Cheney State Park near Wichita; Scott State Park near Scott City and Tuttle Creek State Park near Manhattan.

This is a fairly small place but has a lot of information on the local area and what went on during the 1800's. The museum is very clean and well lit and is comfortable to go through. The outbuildings are fun to look at and they have a decent collection of farm equipment and a few automobiles. It's very close to Ft. Larned so hit them both while you're here.

The Buffalo Bill Cultural Center is a Kansas community partner Travel Information Center. We have Kansas state maps, brochures, and a great gift shop featuring many Kansas made products. Come in for travel assistance, enjoy a cup of coffee, and stay for a picnic lunch. We are pet friendly outside and inside.
This huge sculpture, atop a (accessible) hill overlooking the surrounding plains is worth the jot off I-70. And, the two sculptors are from a nearby town. We were there on a Sunday so, unfortunately, the visitors center was closed. As much as the history of buffalo hunting is a sad one, this sculpture is amazing, just from the art standpoint.

Stop here to see Crazy Legs and get all of your Route 66 information. Had an amazing stop in Baxter Springs on an October Sunday. Happened to meet Crazy Legs at another Route 66 site and he took me to the Rainbow Bridge and I got stories and information galore on Route 66. I’ll be ready to make the Tulsa to Santa Monica trek soon!
