Top 7 Things to do in Three Forks, United States

January 5, 2018 Sheron Bogner

Three Forks is a city in Gallatin County, Montana, United States and is located within the watershed valley system of both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers drainage basins — and is historically considered the birthplace or start of the Missouri River. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The city of Three Forks is named so because it lies geographically near the point, in nearby Missouri Headwaters State Park, where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers converge to form the Missouri River — the longest single river in North America, as well as the major portion of the Missouri-Mississippi River System from the headwaters near Three Forks to its discharge into the Gulf of Mexico. Three Forks is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area of approximately 100,000 people and the greater Bozeman demographic area of approximately 125,000 people.

When you are in the Yellowstone Country of Montana and have some time to visit this state park west of Bozeman, do it! It is quite an exhilarating experience. Our visit was enhanced because our tour guide, Kaylee Armstrong, was a 5of5 performer. Her voice was clear and understandable, her narrative refreshing, and her enthusiasm infectious. The cave itself was unbelievable. There is a fair amount of walking but the trail to the cave is well paved. Inside, there are mostly stairs down with handrails. There are several narrow passages and/or low ceilings so you should be agile. But none of it is unsafe to a person who is in average shape. Check out the website for further information. Also, there is a cafe on site with good sandwiches, pastries, and individual pizzas, so you can breakfast or lunch while there. The whole experience has made me want to explore more caves when the chance appears.

Missouri Headwaters State Park

The Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin Rivers merge to form the Missouri River, which was an important geographical area for early native Americans, traders, trappers and settlers.

We visited early in the morning, and were so glad that we did. Standing on the site where Lewis and Clark camped in 1805 was amazing. The site is very well preserved, and it's easy to imagine that it looks just like it did when the Corps of Discovery were there.

Wonderfully isolated & peaceful park. Must note, though, we noticed the "Beware of Rattlesnakes" warning only at the end of our visit. Never saw the first sign of one, though. Amazingly beautiful & peaceful spot with a nice interpretive kiosk. Well worth the detour.

We enjoyed our visit to the Headwaters Heritage Museum & learned a great deal in the process. The museum's collection includes, among a variety of other things, Lewis and Clark memorabilia, Native American artifacts, artifacts & exhibits from fur trading and stuff from early settlers in the area.

OK course, if you like to play in the wind. Some of the holes are interesting. Open pretty much all year.

Skydive Three Forks

Skydive Three Forks is a great place to make a jump, whether you are wanting to do a tandem or you are an experienced jumper. You absolutely can't beat the views from the air. You can see all of the surrounding mountain ranges, the headwaters of the Missouri, and a few lakes off in the distance. I came to finish off my A license, but I brought a few friends along for their first tandems. We all loved it. The staff and instructors are extremely knowledgeable and make sure that your safety is their first priority. Plus, the prices were some of the best I'd found in the whole North West! If you're around the area and want an exciting and unique experience, definitely check them out! You won't regret it!

Enjoy gorgeous views of the Tobacco Roots, Gallatins, and the Bridger range while in freefall and under canopy! We cant think of a better way to take in Montana's breath-taking scenery!

My husband and I went tandem skydiving at D Zone and had a great time! We did schedule our date and time before hand. The instructors are totally awesome and make you feel comfortable with the experience. I've done several 'extreme' experiences and this one was great. You may have to wait a little while once you arrive but it's worth it. I jumped with Rio and my husband jumped with Marco-- they were both super fun and made it easy to jump. I would say it is worth purchasing the GoPro video and photos especially if it's going to be a once in a life time experience. One down side of their operation is that you can't use your own GoPro. Their operation looks a little ramshackle in appearance but they obviously know what they are doing and I was totally comfortable with the pilot and instructors. It was a fun laid back environment and an awesome rush to jump!
