Whenever in Athens my wife and me will always pass by one of the Loumidis shops - our favorite are the one's on Aiolou in Athens and at Tsamadou in Piraeus - to buy some Greek coffee to take home or as a present for friends. We love these places for their beautiful coffee smell as well as for their nostalgic atmosphere, after all this company goes back to 1920, when three brothers from Karystos in Evia opened a first 'Kafekopteio' (coffee roastery) in Piraeus. Usually we also buy some Greek coffee flavoured with cardamom, as we got to like it on our trips to the Middle East. The cardamom seeds are added to the coffee beans on the spot and the whole thing is then grinded at a high temperature, so the package we get is pretty hot. They sell it in the amounts of 150gr, 250gr or 500gr. On most ready packages a parrot (Papagalos) is depicted, the company's symbol and usually there is also a live parrot in a cage at the shops. In Greece alone there are 11 Loumidis branches and in the meantime it has also expanded to the USA and Canada (Loumidis Foods). Nowadays Loumidis Papagalos is part of Nestle Hellas. Besides coffee (Greek, espresso, filter) in the shops are also sold sweets, liquids like chocolate drinks, aromatic teas, coffee liqueur as well as accessories for drinking and making coffee. Especially the shop at Aiolou near Omonia is very popular, so there can be quite some waiting time before one gets served.
