The church was built in 1868. Ole Tobias Olsen, also known as “the founding father of the Nordlandsbanen railway” was, amongst other things, vicar here for over 20 years. A stone monument in memory of him has been erected near the church. Guided tours available on request to the tourist information centre.
A gem of a farming museum with a farmhouse, storehouse, baking hut, smithy, carpenter’s shop, etc. Artefacts dating from the 1870’s to 1972, when the last owner left the farm. Guided tours on request.
The culture centre offers the visitor insight into the southern Sami culture and way of life. The idea behind the centre’s design is based on the Sami “kata” tent. There are a number of exhibitions at the Centre, and Sami woodwork, books, etc. are on sale there.
Nesfjella Mountains offer great opportunities for those who want to sail on skis with ski sails or kites. Both Buvann by Buvassbrenna and Myking by Fagerhoy Lodge are great places to get started for beginners. Fagerhoy: Drive through Rukkedalen from Nesbyen to Rukke. Turn right towards Myking. Drive through Rukkedalen towards Nesbyen Alpine Centre and turn right towards Nystolen. Follow the yellow ski track from Nystolen to oyvann (about 45 min). By oyvann, you have arrived at a high mountain plateau that goes on for miles to the south towards Norefjell. Lensmannsgarden (the sheriff’s office) is a cultural house in Hattfjelldalen, located 100 meters east passing the church. The mountain people’s lives and history are exhibited through photos, artifacts and literature. In Susendalen, about 40 km from Hattfjelldal center, close to the Swedish border, you will find the old trading center Kroken. The photo exhibition and artifacts is telling the story about trade and relations between the people living close to the border.
