A square-mile rock off the coast of Monhegan that is home to 70 residents.
Wonderful boat trip from New Harbor to Monhegan Island...about 90 minutes, I believe. Quaint and brautiful with breathtaking views is Monhegan Island. Great walking island...a few small shops...at least two art galleries...tbe lovely Islam Inn for accommodations and dining. Several guest houses and some houses for rent as well. Lots of history here...great hiking trails (several for only experienced hikers with appropriate footwear)...gorgeous small beaches...a couple of lobster in the rough restaurants (most are seasonal)...a sweet provisions shop (sldo serving dabeicges and bsjed hoods)...oh and near the ferry landing is an amazingly quaint bakery cafe...delicious homemade treats and I had two of the best iced lattes I ever tasted! Absolutely beautiful perennial gardens grace the many historical homes along your walk. Photo ops abound. You will see artists painting on site...writers in garden retreats composing. The day we were there, a drone was circling on high while photographing this picturesque island. Definitely worth more than one trip to take in all the wonder that Monhegan Island has to offer...it will be a day or more well spent if you do make this journey.

If you like micro brews then you need to find your way up to Monhegan Brewing Company.
You have to be a true die hard beer lover to find this place. It is on a island 10 miles off the Maine shore.
They don't sell the beer on the mainland which is a shame because the beer is that good. They do have single bottles to go and you can get a growler filled
This is truly a home brew set up. The facility looks to be no larger than a typical house.
My favorite is the Crows Nest IPA
We bought a large bottle of the Crows Nest IPA and lugged in around the Island in our backpack. I should have brought a bigger backpack.

Gives an insight to the lives of the light house keeper and his family, and also gives information on the fog horn keeper who was located just across the harbor on Mannana Island. Of the multiple visits to this museum it was the first time I actually paid any attention to the fog horn aspect. In any case, a must visit when on the island.

This is a great little gallery in the center of town. You can enjoy artwork, mostly paintings, with strong Maine themes -- the sea, the scenery, the rugged life of the coast. The work is beautiful -- and most of the art is better priced than what you would find on the mainland, especially for Monhegan artists. You should definitely go in, enjoy, and possibly consider a purchase.

Fish Beach is also listed as a premier Sea Glass prospecting area on Monhegan Island. Lots of the glass found on the beach is "fresh", lacking the frosted sea worn look that sea glass should have. But there are plenty of other more seasoned sea glass specimens to be found. Parents should take care, as there are lots of sharp pieces of glass to avoid.
