The forested ridges and cool hollows of St. Francois State Park offer visitors a retreat from everyday life. Three hiking trails, including one that allows equestrian access, wind through the forested hills and glades of the Coonville Creek Wild Area. Easy access to the Big River makes St. Francois State Park ideal for canoeing and floating and the many shaded picnic sites and two covered shelters make the park perfect for family gatherings. Overnight guests can choose from more than 100 campsites, in campgrounds with modern restrooms, hot showers, and laundry facilities.
We hiked the Swimming Deer trail (~3.4 miles) and were so fortunate to see the bluebell flowers in bloom. There were literally carpets of them where you could see only the flowers and the green leaves/stems. We found the Swimming Deer trail to be accurately rated as moderate. There were some ascents/descents but none that were overwhelming. At one point we were able to look out over the Big River from a rock outcropping where we were probably about 100 feet above the river. The stream beds that occur throughout the area were dry while we were there, making for easy crossings. We saw what appeared to be 2 earth cracks or something like that. One was covered with grating and the other was open. Quite fascinating. The hike took us about 1.5 hours moving along at a decent pace. We were in a hardwood forest that provided shade, varying flora and views. We would like to go back to this park on another visit and hike the other trails. The park is situated so that we did not hear any road traffic until we got back closer to the trailhead. Note: the trailhead for Swimming Deer is *inside* the campground. Park at the bathhouse, walk behind it and the trailhead is right there.

This is no ordinary museum with a few things about space flight. This is a world class collection, and combined with a visit to the Bonne Terre Mine a block away, makes a trip to Bonne Terre a must. The docents here are highly knowledgeable and the collection is specific to outer space, not planes. It might not be too interesting to little kids, but older kids will find it cool. The museum is privately owned and curated by a gentleman who knew Gus Grissom's brother. It's a love affair of the years of moon travel.
The Fancy Crow Creative studio offers a variety of drop in projects such as jewelry making, wreath making, paint on wood, paper on wood, and a variety of others. We also offer sheduled workshops where you can learn a variety of arts and crafts.
