This canyon is spectacular, and offers some nice short walks. It is just a short drive from the main road, and while the road is bumpy, it is well worth the short detour.

Unplanned stop and it's very close to Road 1. Only a couple of minutes walk to the fall. Surprised to see a tour bus pulled in but the group was only there for a quick 5 mins. Then we had the place all to ourselves. Worth stopping by!

After driving along the strange landscape of mossy rocks (?), this place gives you a chance to stop and experience ehat it is you have been seeing. This is one of very, very few possible stops along the road since it's illegal to drive off-road/stop at the side of the road or just stop on top of the road. Here you have a rest stop with signs and a small track to follow around in the lava field and see what it is all about. And yes *spoiler*, it is mossy lava blocks you've been seeing.

Really cool place for a quick stop, if you're driving on the South side of Iceland. Usually is not too busy since it's not a typical stop for people.

The scramble up the cliff beside the falls is helped by the steps and your efforts are rewarded by the views of the feeder lake and the vistas. The walk along the top is easy with gentle undulations but the descent to the woodland is very steep and pretty slippery when frozen. Having regained the flat again you are soon rewarded by the ‘Church Floor ‘ a naturally occurring geological feature before a rather dull return leg beside the road. Allegedly 3.5km. but I’d say a little more maybe. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours. Highlight for me was the view from the top of the falls.

If you're able to make a quick stop (about 15 minutes) on Þjóðvegur (the Ring Road 1) to do the quick scenic lava walk, absolutely do. This whole field is covered with delicate moss and lava rock and it feels like you've just stepped into another world. There's a little viewing platform that allows you to look over the whole area, and a little guided roped off section in the field that allows you to walk amongst the lava. Watch your step because the path is very, very narrow and uneven. Try not to step on any of the lava rock or moss that is growing on either side of your feet!

Close to Route 1 and Kirkjubaejarklaustur and shouldn't be missed by anyone driving past, as useful rest stop. We were first visitors on day after a lot of snow, so interesting 5 minute walk from the car park, alongside stream and over a small bridge. We told the next visitors the route, as not entirely clear in the snow. We had to brush the snow off it to see it. It is a flat pavement composed of the tops of mostly hexagonal basalt pillars. The completely natural result of water and ice erosion, this looks like a stone floor created by a master craftsman. Sorry about typos on description of photos but takes too long to change and upload all the photos again!
