This historic Elizabethan house (circa 1587) features a serpentine park that was designed by Lancelot Brown and a gothic greenhouse and stables.
An amazing house with wonderful interiors and very fine art. I think we saw 32 rooms and every one contained items of beauty and great interest. Right from the start we received a warm welcome (worth mentioning Jack who was so friendly and helpful). So much to see. Spent over 3 hours here taking it all in. I recommend this place and also recommend you allow enough time to take a leisurely look at everything. This is not a place to be rushed.

The company’s annual season is a treat that everyone local or visiting Stamford should enjoy. You can bring a picnic first or have a pleasant meal in the house. Have a glass or jug of Pimms and then see the show. It doesn’t matter what the weather is (and I’ve seen in torrential rain and blazing sunshine) as the audience is undercover in the tent whilst the players are amongst the trees, adding to the atmosphere. Do bring a rug on a typical English evening though as it can get chilly. A special mention for the bar staff who I have always found really lovely. If choosing a play I would suggest a lighter one, dare I say one of Shakespeare’s more “frothy” ones like Midsummer, than the more serious ones like Henry since it is an amateur company.

Visited last week for a meal and 80’s Xmas show. The price for both was very reasonable and cannot complain about the food! All three courses very tasty with excellent friendly service. The show was fantastic, everyone up on their feet for the whole show! I have done the same meal and show in the past and really hope they are back next year!

Stamford is a great half way stop just off the A1 motorway if you happen to be travelling North. There is easy parking in a large lot next to the Town Meadows. Traffic was quite busy getting through the main town on a Sunday but it was well worth it. You can picnic on the town meadows where there are picnic tables available. Enjoy a stroll through the stone town with its lovely church spires and lanes to explore. There are cafes and restaurants to enjoy. A very pleasant stop of our journey North.
