Taste your way through the stunning landscape of Hawke's Bay with international cheese expert Juliet Harbutt. Visiting local wineries, collecting or eating ice cream, figs, olives and seasonal fruits and along the way drop into local artists, galleries and shops. After a tasting at Black Barn cellar door you will head up the hill to Juliet's home overlooking the vines where she will put together a delicious lunch with all the goodies you have gathered and finish with a tutored tasting of local cheeses matched with local wine. If along the way you find a fruit or even fish you've never tasted or you fancy BBQ NZ lamb then Juliet will cook it while her Jack Russell dog Winston retrieves the pine nuts if he's not chasing wild rabbits or quail. Plus you can pick fresh leaves, flowers and herbs from her raised garden beds for a wonderful salad. Every tour is tailored to you, the weather and the seasons and gives an insight into the culinary and cultural history of Hawke's Bay.

Birdwoods Gallery is a very special place in the heart of Hawke's Bay. Set in the countryside just 3km from Havelock North Village, Birdwoods Gallery and its small companion, the Birdwoods Sweet Shop, are a 'must see' for young and old. Three historic buildings have been relocated to this pretty rural setting and transformed to become a distinctive and enchanting visitor attraction. Enjoy our famous morning or afternoon tea or come for a delicious garden lunch with family or friends. (Lunch bookings recommended). End it off with a delicious real fruit ice-cream from our little Ice Cream Shop (summer time) or an espresso coffee and cake. Birdwoods is a place 'Where Everything has a Story'.
I knew the venue had an art gallery and sweet shop - what I also found was a gorgeous oasis of lawn, trees and stunning large stone sculptures at very reasonable prices. There was live music, so wandering around the sculptures with a fresh fruit ice cream was a delight. There is also and extensive cafe, indoor art and craft gallery and then the cute sweet shop. This is a lovely place for family to visit. This would also make a great venue for an event, with a cute private room within the garden.

Black Barn Vineyards is a boutique winery in the heart of Hawkes Bay. Our Cellar Door and Kitchen shop are open 7 days a week.
A really nice winery with a good tasting option ( deducted from at purchase) plus lovely shop next to winery. A great way to spend the scatter on in the courtyard under the fig trees. The lady who served our tasting also recommended a local Japanese restaurant which was absolutely divine.

This place is easy to get to off the Waimarama Rd turnoff before Ocean Beach if headed to the beach. 2 minute drive off the main road. There are three parking areas and three tracks to the falls. The middle track by the portaloo is the easiest grade and can be walked in jandals. Easy to get into the waterfall pool and swim around. The rope swing is safe for jumping into the water. You can also get to the top of the falls.

Te Mata Estate is the oldest winery in New Zealand still operating. Our entire focus is fine wine production. There's no restaurant or accommodation here, only a small Cellar Door for tastings. Unlike other producers we are a working winery who undertake every winemaking step on site. Te Mata Coleraine and Bullnose have both been ranked in James Suckling’s ‘Top 50 Wines of the World’, and the winery has been awarded Robert Parker's highest classification 'Outstanding Producer, Five Stars'. Our tasting list covers all of our wines, but only six at a time. VIP tours are available with 24 hours notice. #1 on Decanter's List of 2019 wineries to visit worldwide.
As my wife hasn't visited this area for over 25 years we decided to check out a few vineyards in the Hawkes Bay area. We looked at Te Mata on the website and that was our first visit. What a wonderful, knowledge gathering experience. The young lady who was doing the tastings was an expert in getting across the basics of choosing a good wine and how your pallet picks up different flavours and tastes/aromas in different wines. She didn't try to up-sell us to wines we didn't want and let us choose what we liked. A great ambassador for the Te Mata estate Winery. If you do a tasting ($10.00) 5 different wines, and you purchase any wine the tasting becomes free! Give it a go, you might enjoy it!
