Dismal Swamp Canal Trail

This is a really cool park. It's a wonderful re-purposing of old U.S. Hwy 17. The old 2-lane highway has been turned into a hiking/biking trail. It stretches for over 16 miles, I only hiked the first three miles up and back from the northern trail head. I really enjoyed the peaceful nature walk, which at places had breathtaking, postcard-esque views of the canal. It wasn't too crowded either, even on the 85 degree Memorial Day I visited. It also wasn't swarming with flies and mosquitos, as I feared going in. There is plenty of free parking at the northern trail head, as well as a clean public restroom. There are also picnic tables and benches there, and at several places along the trail. The paved trail makes this a suitable and easy walk for any fitness level or age. It was a great experience, and I will be back again!

I stopped in here to look around for items for my grandmother to paint. The staff was friendly and asked if I needed any help. I was just browsing to see what they had in stock since I had some time to stop. I may be back in the future to buy some things. I love that they have classes here to attend. They have several options for ceramics to buy and take home to paint on your own.

Chesapeake Arboretum

Reviewed By 354mec229 - Lucinda, United States

My husband, dog, and I walked the Chesapeake Arboretum trails for the first time today. We wanted fresh air and, due to COVID-19, not many people. We got it and loved it. The camellias were blooming, the trees had changed to their fall colors, and when we did cross paths with some other walkers, we had plenty of room to stay a safe distance. Lake Hughes was a pleasant surprise. With the Fall colors and ducks on the lake, our pictures were gorgeous. We're in our late 60s. We did have to watch the tree roots, but the day on the trails was so enjoyable. Kudos to the city of Chesapeake for well marked and nicely maintained trails. We'll definitely return.
