In 1791, Washington County, Pennsylvania, was a heavily wooded wilderness at the headwaters of the Ohio River. Many Scotch-Irish veterans of the Revolutionary War had returned to the area and the rocky farms that they had established before the War. They struggled against the weather and disease, and being far from the East Coast, enjoyed few luxuries. But through the rugged ingenuity of those brave Colonists, one of the first American Industries was born. Whiskey. Years later, the stories of their defiance against the Federal Excise Tax on distilled spirits (AKA The Whiskey Rebellion) are preserved in museums, churches and cemeteries around the county. Now, heritage grain once again grows in the same soil they so dearly loved, travels down the paved paths upon which they drove the whiskey-laden mule trains, and arrives at a new Mingo Creek Meetinghouse where it is distilled and enjoyed by the next generation of the Mingo Creek Society.
Our visit with one of the most interesting and wonderful family run distilleries in SW Pennsylvania was fabulous. Our tasting of their products with a complete background on arriving at the end products was presented by Ellen while we enjoyed the great ambiance of their tasting area. We were the only two people on the tour. We each left with a bottle of their products to enjoy at home. I'd highly recommend a visit to the distillery for a great tasting experience and seeing a truly wonderful family business success story.

Given the size and the $5 price of the museum, we were expecting a quick breeze through. We were pleasantly surprised at the front door by a docent who gave us an amazing amount of history and background of the Duncan Miller Glass Company. We spent over 2 hours learning about various patterns and the significance of techniques developed by these amazing glass makers.

If you are ever curious about the leaders of the Whiskey Rebellion, the home of David Bradford is a must see. From the hand embroidered wainscot from 1773, to the games and dolls of the children’s room, the museum accurately depicts the way the owners lived and worked in Washington County. I was completely blown away by the fact that David Bradford was the ONLY leader not pardoned by George Washington!

We visited here on Sept 30 2020. It's a little outdoor mall. There are many stores here. Something for everyone. My husband and I enjoyed walking around, and browsing at the shops. They have directories posted throughout the mall, plus they have paper maps available too. There are vending machines by the restrooms. They also have nursing rooms for breastfeeding mommas, with changing stations.

So how did I not know about this winery?!? The building and setup is in downtown Washington, PA. The wine selection is FANTASTIC! They have anything from dry white to fruit and ice wine. Tasting is very reasonable and so are the prices for the wine. After our tasting we enjoyed a glass of wine and bought several bottles to take home. Can’t wait to go back!
