Capital Prize Gold Mine Tour

Most extensive mine tour in Colorado! Visitors can enjoy an easy walk over 1,000 feet into the mountain and see several tunnels. Experience the challenges of working by candle light, view seven of the 17 gold veins discovered, see the machinery and tools and explore a stope. Visitors will also learn about drilling, blasting and mucking and the importance of mining back in the early days of the Wild West. The Capital Prize is still an active mine and visitors will see a modern prospecting operation which includes dredges, sluice boxes, classifiers and shaker tables. Instead of gold panning, you get to mine the real stuff inside our stope and keep what you find!

Our first trip to Colorado and we loved every bit. Our family trip of 5 adults and 6 children had a bucket list of things to do and a gold mine was one of them. Capital Prize Mine did not disappoint! The family/staff was amazing! Friendly and charismatic! They gave us a detailed history of the mine as well as educated us on how the minerals are mined and processed both now and then! The kids even got to chisel away at a mineral vein and walk away with a token of their hard work! That little chunk of ore to them was priceless! We’ve been through other mine tours before and this one although humble has topped our lists of best mine adventures!

When planning our weekend up in this part of the Colorado Rockies, I filled out the online form, because the museum / hotel is closed during the 'dead of winter.' To my surprise, Kevin, the Executive Director contacted me and set up a private tour. At Kevin's suggestion, we watched the exceptionally well produced Rocky Mountain PBS special on the hotel (where Kevin does a great job on-screen!) and came a bit more prepared. What an absolute delight! Our '45 minute' tour was actually an hour and a half, and was informative, entertaining, inspiring, and just a great time!!! Kevin's passion and knowledge are so very evident. How could we have lived here in Colorado so many years and yet had never discovered this gem!! You are looking into the life of this remarkable 'renaissance man,' with all the original furnishings around you! This is a MUST-SEE! This is a true Colorado treasure!

Guanella Pass Brewing

At the foot of the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway in Historic Georgetown, CO, sits Guanella Pass Brewery. A true mountain brewery. We believe that where you drink beer is as important as what beer you drink. So leave the grind behind, sit for a bit, and share a story or two. Because here, all you need is what you have and a good beer.

Great little brewery in Georgetown with good beer and they are dog friendly inside and outside. The owner and bartender were both there and very nice. They had a peach wheat that was very good. I also heard they were going to be opening a restaurant next door, so we'll have to try that out when we come back next year.

Georgetown Energy Museum

Amazing that a piece of 1909 hydroelectric technology is still running, pumping power into the modern grid. It's because this was one of the earliest 60-cycle AC generating stations, which was necessary to get power to the remote mines in the area. Tesla's AC worked much better than Edison's DC power, which cannot travel very far. That makes it still "current" today (to make a bad pun). Museum open daily until 5PM in summer only. See the generators humming away, powering a substantial portion of modern Georgetown's needs. Also a great collection of old electric motors, transformers, switches, and appliances. Docent was very knowledgable. Though not great for small children, any older kid who likes science will be fascinated by this living, working "history of science" museum.

This is probably one of the smallest museums that I have ever visited, maybe the tour will take about 5 to 10 minutes but there is some history around specially if you’re into museums and history I will recommend you to visit otherwise just take some pictures from the outside and move on.
