It is part of the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. The population was 65,834 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1772, the town contains the B. & O. Railroad Museum's branch at the Ellicott City Station, built in 1830 as the first terminus of the initial line. The downtown historic district is located in the valley of the small Tiber River, with its east end abutting the Patapsco River, which forms the Baltimore County line. As of the 2000 census, Ellicott City surpassed Towson (county seat of neighboring Baltimore County) for the first time, as the largest unincorporated county seat in the country.

Urban girl, happy Home, vintage soul.
Downtown Ellicott City is a great place to visit. Sweet Elizabeth Jane's has a terrific selection of clothing and home goods and their showroom window decorations are always fun to see. Plus they are pet friendly so our mini poodle Marley is welcome. The staff always has a treat for him.

This free museum is only open during the busy weekend afternoons so easy access is the problem. From Rt #40, we took Rogers Ave. to Court House Dr. (1.2miles) directly to the large free parking behind the Howard Co. Courthouse. Then a level 500' walk passes the 1851 jail and courthouse, to this distinctive church built in 1894. Here were scores of pictured descriptions and artifact displays about early Ellicott, its role in the Civil War, and its struggle with 17 significant floods since 1772. After watching one of the flood videos and seeing its beautiful organ-dominated sanctuary (continues as a wedding chapel), we exited to descend the new stairway. Its direct access to Main Street makes it a short walk, passing the Firehouse Museum to the free B&O City Station Museum built in 1831. We had a very informative and enjoyable visit to this historic city of pretty buildings along a narrow corridor filled with visitors and a constant parade of autos.

The B&O Ellicott City Station Museum is the oldest surviving train station in America, also many would argue that it is also the first station in America in general. The station was originally established as Freight Station only with passengers loading and unloading from a platform attached to the second story of the hotel that once existed across the street from the platform. In the 1850's the B&O decided to transform the station for passenger use as well as freight. The station was also an important transportation hub during the civil war moving both supplies and troops for the Union. The station continued as a passenger station until December 31st 1949 and as Freight Station until the 1970's. The station was than converted to a museum and is listed under the National Register of Historic Places. The management of the Museum has changed throughout the years, with Howard County Recreation and Parks taking over management from the site in September of 2017
A great stop for history buffs and train enthusiasts. The extensive miniature train set fills a huge room and tells the story of the first 13 miles of the B&O. They have replica of the towns along the way built in their original fashion. The trains turn on and move along the tracks. There is a trolley in miniature and a full caboose to climb into which is a great photo opportunity. The main building has a lot of history and original clothing and furniture. The gist shop is cute and restrooms clean and available. The caretakers were very kind and helpful. Love the train bandanas they wear - very much like an old time conductor. The donation of $3 was well worth the visit. Parking is nearby. As an outreach they are looking to record personal stories from previous employees of the B&O Ellicott City contact info: [email protected] We would visit again in a heartbeat.

I wanted to treat my cousin and myself to a spa day because we both got married within a short period of time and she helped me so much with my wedding. I booked a Swedish massage and a sea salt body glow complete with Vichy Shower (OMG)! The staff that booked my reservation and checked me in were all super helpful. I had Melanie take care of my massage and she helped me relax after having a super rough week at work. I even felt rested after not sleeping well for a few nights. Amy took care of my Scrub and Vichy Shower, and she made everything super comfortable. She was super bubbly and we talked throughout almost the whole thing. When I communicated that the salt was irritating my arms a little, she mixed it with sugar to make it more gentle. I highly recommend the vichy shower! Both technicians were fantastic and made every penny I spent worth it. Even the woman that came into the bathroom to empty out the laundry was super sweet and told us to have a wonderful day. All around wonderful service. I wouldn't mind returning one day.
