Motana is a new Italian restaurant in Rayong that bills itself as "Italian, Pizza, Steak, Coffee, Bekery (sic), and Bingsu" and is open from 7 am for coffee and breakfast until midnight. Where the bingsu - Korean shaves ice confection - came from in an Italian restaurant, is anyone's guess.Putting aside the garish angels with golden wings that greet you at the entrance, the place is tastefully and comfortably furnished, with soft arm chairs at the coffee tables and well appointed dining tables and chairs.I wanted to check it out, but decided to start at the opening end to get a feel for the place, so I ordered a Hot Coffee Americano and sat down to do my morning newspaper crossword.I also checked out the dinner menu and nearly had a heart attack when I saw the prices, which place Motana at the very top end of restaurants in Rayong. For example, simple soups at Baht 150 to 200, and ordinary appetizers like French fries, garlic bread or bruschetta are Baht 180 to 260. In the pasta section, fettuccini with pesto sauce and smoked salmon is Baht 350, and pizzas are Baht 320 to 380. When you come to the main section of the menu you move into another price range altogether. Topping the list is Lamb Gigot at Baht 1,250. Likewise the desert sections are expensive. Melon, mango and sticky rice, which you could buy at Rayong's fresh food market for Baht 50, is priced at Baht 350.My view of the menu as over-priced was confirmed when I went to pay for my coffee - Baht 60 - as opposed to Baht 40 to 45 at every other coffee shop in town.Rayong has a multitude of restaurants where it is possible to enjoy an excellent dinner for around Baht 300 a head - and many Thais would consider that the top end of the market. So unless it is a very special occassion or I win the lottery, I will not be racing back to Motana.I would like to thank you for your comments. However, we wonder why you judged everything as being expensive even though you haven't tried anything. (Except the coffee)We are always looking for the best ingredients for our kitchen from many local and global suppliers, we review and improve all our kitchen processes to make sure our foods are cooked with the best available materials and to maintain our level of quality. For example. All our steaks - imported beef only - are done to the guests wishes. Doneness by international standards. You also might not know that the 350 Baht "Pasta with Smoked Salmon" is served with a grilled salmon steak. Our bakery products are from Montrio Coffee. For 7 years already Montrio is known as the best bakery & coffee shop in and around Rayong. It is managed by the same owners as Motana. Our Bingsu ice desserts are produced with original machines imported from Korea. These "Melon Bingsu" or "Mango and Sticky Rice Bingsu" are surely not the simple “Melon” or “Mango and Sticky Rice” you can find in the local market as you write. The prices can really not be compared. So please do not judge and compare Motana with any restaurant unless you have tried at least some of our foods. We are sure all our prices are reasonable. One cannot make the perfect food with low grade materials, the great experience with untrained staff. We made Motana to be completely different and outstanding. So let the people decide themselves whether our prices are expensive or reasonable after they have tasted our foods.PS) In every other Coffeeshop in town a coffee is 40 to 45B, you wrote. We know the prices vary from 20B up to 100B.PSS) We agree that you can find restaurants in Rayong where you can eat dinner at around 300B a head but you will not find them to be the same quality as Motana.

The Terrace Restaurant

Originally the five of us were heading to a small Thai restaurant specializing in Northern Thai food. But when we got there it was closed, so we headed further up the road to Terrest, which we had not tried before.Terrest is an upmarket restaurant offering Thai food, steaks and other European dishes. There are tables outside or upstairs on the balcony, but they face the street which is a bit noisy so we opted to sit inside with the air conditioning.Although I love Thai food, I decided to give the eye filet steak a go and my Swiss friend chose the New Zealand mussels with spaghetti. My steak was perfect after I carefully explained what "blue" meant. It was tender and came with a mushroom sauce, salad, French fries and some garlic bread. My friend's spaghetti was also excellent, but with five mussels and a very small serve of spaghetti it more resembled a starter that a main course. Our Thai friends stuck to the Thai side of the menu, ordering a deep fried pork knuckle, a whole sea bass in chili and garlic sauce, raw prawns in a marinade, chicken in spicy basil, and a dish of fish filets with chili, green peppercorns and garlic. The three of them voted their food A1.Terrest has local beers but also an interesting selection of German, Dutch and Belgian beers, including Paulaner, which I tried. However, at nearly 200 baht for a small bottle the beers are somewhat expensive. The staff are friendly and attentive. The front of restaurant manager is Khun Golf, who speaks excellent English, and his wife, Khun Kwang, runs the kitchen.Terrest was well worth the visit, but it is priced very much of the top end of the restaurant market in Rayong.

Outside of Bangkok it is hard to find a good steak, which is why I normally stick to Thai food, or pork, chicken, fish or seafood. Most often Thai steak is like eating old shoe leather with a blunt knifeBut occasionally I need to get my teeth around a good steak. There is only one place in Rayong that I have found that meets the standard - Odile Steak House. It offers a selection of steaks, including T-bones, tenderloin and sirloin. These are served with a selection of freshly steamed vegetables or salad. The only thing missing is extremely hot English mustard, which for me is a must when eating good steak. I overcome that problem by taking my own.The one downside of Odile is that sometimes either the waiter of the chef does not understand the difference between blue, rare, medium and well done.Odile has a good range of Thai and European beers and a small but good selection of wines.

California Steak Restaurant

California Steak is the premier roof top restaurant at Kameo Grand Hotel, right in the center of Rayong.Tonight it offered a buffet dinner at Baht 650 a head. It was well worth it.The offerings included an extensive salad bar, various pizzas, a carvery with roast legs of lamp and baked ham, and a barbecue, with salmon, tuna, prawns, other seafood, and steaks cooked to order. There was an extensive array of vegetables, including roast potatoes, spinach, corn and peas.To cap it off there was a mouth-watering table of cakes, trifles, pastries, tarts, and a cheese board.Washed down with a bottle of Australian Penfold's Shiraz, it was a memorable meal.Thank you for taking the trouble to write to us about your dining experience at the California Steak. We are very pleased that we were able to meet your wishes for a most fulfilling dinner and we will pass on your compliments to our Chef and his team. We hope very sincerely to have the pleasure of serving again in the future. At Cape and Kantary Hotels, we actively support SOS Children’s Villages and the Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. We do not serve foie gras, birds’ nest or shark’s fin in our restaurants and we also stand firmly against the exploitation of Thai elephants for commercial or entertainment purposes.Yours Sincerely The Management of the Californai Steak
