Museo de Madera - Escultor Jose Castro

Our Museum will take you on a journey of infinite sensations, art can be breathed among so much carved work, come to spend a different time

Mr José Castro’s life’s work is exhibited in the museum at the rear of his hardware shop. He’s 80 years old and for about 60 years has been carving the most inventive artwork. It is so intricate and every piece tells a story, often with a surprise in store. He only speaks Spanish but luckily his nephew was there to do some translation. It’s extraordinary.

Atelier Marisa Bernotti

Marisa Bernotti's extensive palette informs her works with joy and frivolity. Her large canvases, however, are anything but juvenile; there is a subtle understanding of human nature, of seeing a collective truth via these compelling figures. Through details such as large ears that seem to hear, but perhaps do not listen, and eyes that look but may not see, Bernotti grasps the confusion inherent to our fast-paced society. Like Van Gogh or Picasso, she paints abstract figures who witness the world, and each other, with a skewed yet keen eye. And like her famous predecessors, Bernotti pursues her art for her own delight and profound need for expression. The artist's background in graphic arts is unmistakable in her colorful, linear oeuvre, while her flat tones are reminiscent of early twentieth century abstract artists. The works are inspired by dreams; she invigorates fantastical figures with their own life force, forcing the viewer to question their notions of reality. Drawing on her experiences of her native Uruguay, Bernotti creates paintings that are at once indigenous and universal. She has her workshop in Dolores, Uruguay, South America
