Mellerud is a sleepy little town, and it is hard to find a place to eat on the weekend. Luckily for us the Restaurang Vågen was open.
While they offer pizza and kebabs like typical Swedish restaurants (don't as me why, but I've seen countless pizza and/or kebab places here) they also offer Greek dishes as well as some specials. The two times I've eaten here I've had the fish special, and I haven't been disappointed.
This time all three of us got the Rödingfilé, which I believe was Arctic Char, seasoned and pan-seared with some amazing roasted potatoes served with a side of cream sauce. It was tasty and filling, and all three of us enjoyed it.
With one exception, the food in Mellerud has been very good, but if you want something other than Thai later in the evening, then your choices are limited. You won't go wrong choosing the Vågen.

One of the biggest challenges by travelling around in this vast country is to get a nice meal without leaving mainroads and without the intence smell of overdue fries-oil.
I have eaten at Café Gruzzolo a couple of times earlier. Even today it is relaxing and a nice experiense. Good chairs, it is clean and food absolutely good. Could probably not get a better hamburger any other place. Fries are also from potatoes... Home made.
Service here is really good. I just hope more people discover the place in Mellerud. I love it!

We took the lunch buffet option which was excellent. Even better value for money than in the week. What made it different was the freshness of the cooked food: it kept getting refreshed. The food was spicy and delicious. The fried items were particularly good.

Mitt ute på landet ligger den här pärlan. Goda bakverk och kaffe i en omgivning som skulle kunna vara definitionen av Sverige.

The brasserie is attached to a smokery and specialises in smoked fish and shellfish. It has a lovely location right next to the locks of the Dalsland Canal so you can see the boats and the train arriving. A number of reviews have commented on poor service but we found the staff to be very attentive. When we asked about the child vs adult portions they offered to bring out some extra if the childs menu wasn't enough. It was a very generous portion but our son's love of hot smoked salmon meant that we took them up on their offer. The shellfish pasta with prawns and crayfish tails was also very tasty. If you are on a budget then the smokery sells baguettes and fish and there's a Seating area next to the restaurant.
