Every neighborhood in San Francisco has its own personality, from the hippie chic of the Upper Haight to the hipster grit of the Mission. The Marina district boasts trendy bistros and postcard-perfect views of the Golden Gate Bridge, while Noe Valley offers quaint and quiet boutiques. Wave hello to the sea lions at Pier 39, and sample local cheese and charcuterie at the Ferry Building. Sit in on a yoga session in Dolores Park or marvel at the Dutch Windmill across from Ocean Beach.

Far Fung Places is an ethno-cultural travel company that specializes in travel to 'other worlds' in search of in indigenous art, body adornment, intact cultural and religious traditions that have not been affected by westernization.. One of the first niche travel companies to enter Bhutan in the early 1990s, Far Fung Places values and supports the arts, which permeate every aspect of life. Treading sensitively into foreign lands has forged bonds of friendship that assure our return with open arms. It is our pleasure to share these personal joys with our clients.
Here is the bottom line: I did my homework and concluded that Far Fung is the best travel company to plan and facilitate your adventure to Bhutan, and their guide, Karchung, is the best individual to introduce you to Bhutanese culture and society. Why? Our family of five just spent three wonderful weeks in Bhutan. We had the advantage that Far Fung has had a long-term, 25-year presence within Bhutan. Through their established relationships with many Bhutanese, we enjoyed a very personalized and educational introduction into Bhutan. In addition to touring and learning the history of Bhutan, we also met with a representative spectrum of individuals throughout Bhutanese society: farmers, teachers, business leaders, scholars, authors, Buddhist leaders, doctors, mental health workers, politicians, and various civil servants. Kathleen, Denis, and their staff were meticulous in helping us plan and flawless in orchestrating the logistics of our visit. Since I have spent a lifetime traveling and studying various cultures in pursuit of my anthropological and psychological interests, I have fairly high expectations of travel companies and guides. Karchung is the best overall guide that I have ever encountered. His breath of knowledge regarding history, society, Buddhism, and culture was stunning. His storytelling abilities entertained and enlightened us. Karchung is also one of the nicest and kindest individuals that I have ever met. His warm heart, caring disposition, humor, and continuous attention transformed our relationship from guide to friend. You have my unconditional endorsement of Far Fung!

Captain Mike took us on a great trip around the bay taking in the bridge and Alcatraz Island. Baring in mind this is usually a fishing boat, Captain Mike was really good at giving us all the relevant details and history, an excellent and throughly enjoyable ride ~ thanks

Quiet neighborhood and the slides are in the middle of it. We had so much fun at this place. Kids loved and so the adults. There are some cardboard boxes there left by other visitors, but I recommend to bring yours just in case you can’t find any! It is much better to slide with them! No restrooms around the area! Bring plenty of water!

Free concerts at beautiful Stern Grove? Yes please! Nestled among the eucalyptus trees is Stern Grove - what an amazing place to see a concert! Seating is on a first come, first served basis, and you may end up in the dirt under the trees, or on a log. Bring a tarp or a blanket and be careful. Fantastic sound system, too. Buy food or beverages there, or bring your own. Chill vibe and well organized.

We went to Fort Baker, which is in Sausalito. There is a nice road that leads down to the San Francisco Bay. There are various fort buildings. There is also Travis Marina. There were boats in the harbor, People were fishing. Its a good place to hike. There are also iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Leaving Pier 39 we ‘visit’ the USS Pampanito, a World War II submarine. Looking down from a dockside visit fails to capture how small these subs were. Typically the Liberty Ship, USS Jeremiah O’Brien, is moored along Pier 45, currently moved to allow for rebuilding of Pier 45 after a horrendous fire. We pass that now leaving Pier 39 on our way in and out. The experience would not be complete without a water-level view of the Pier 39 Sea Lions. Looking down from Pier 39 is one experience, staring at them eye-to-eye is quite a different way to appreciate the power behind those barking Sea Lions. We keep the trips to about 30 minutes so that it is both affordable and practical for families. Nothing gives us more pleasure to watch how intensely the children absorb the experience of a boat ride on the San Francisco Bay. The explosion of laughter as a random splash sprinkles seawater or the fixed gaze watching Pelicans take to the air remind all of us of the wonder of discovery.
