Sitting on the south shore of Rhode Island, the town of Westerly is a quiet residential community in the winter, swelling in the summer to accommodate tourists eager to explore the local beaches, Narragansett Bay and the Rhode Island Sound. Just over the border from Connecticut, Westerly is conveniently located to the Aquarium at Mystic, as well as the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casinos. Nearby, the picturesque village of Watch Hill features ocean views, ice cream shops, and craft boutiques.

Watch Hill bird sanctuary.
We came for Memorial Day and got there about 10:30. Thankfully it wasn’t very crowded. You pass the watch hill yacht club and walk over the dunes and drop down on to this beautiful beach. It goes way out into the water and has beach on both sides. There are great views of the watch hill light house and all the boats. It’s the only place we have been that you can play on the dunes. There isn’t much public parking so go early. 2 hours free on the street and 2 hours free in the shopping parking lot; or spend 20-30 dollars for all day in the paid lot. This is a must visit beach in RI, off season or now during covid is probably the best time to go.

The beach is wide and long. Some places near by make it private. The beach is soft beige sand. Lovely view. Easy to get in and out of the water.

Dunes Park is a great stretch of beach located right at the Weekapaug Breachway and is geared toward families. We have restrooms, bath houses, showers, and a concession stand available only to customers of Dunes Park. We have very friendly parking lot staff as well as 2 lifeguards on duty each day to help make your visit a pleasant and safe one. So come on down today!

Rhode Island's largest and most popular beach will be handicap accessible.
I had no idea Rhode Island beaches were so beautiful. A hidden gem when so many might crowd Nantucket and Cape Cod, this place is special. The beach is well cared for and frequented by locals. Covid definitely left it’s mark on things but also likely we were a bit late in season. Nonetheless there are good options for places to stay. I found this a great area for short day trips too - Block Island, Boston, Newport etc.

I love, love, love Watch Hill! I have been going since I was a baby. So many wonderful memories! The parking did go up after Taylor moved in. It is so much better than Misquamicut! Always worth it for me. The pay side next to the carousel offers bathroom, outdoor showers and changing room. The waves are gentle, great for kids and adults who don’t want to be knocked down by rough surf.
