This beautiful river runs through the township of Uji – famed for its green tea – which is about a 30 minute JR train ride away from Kyoto Station. We certainly wished we had more time to explore its surroundings. Half a day was not enough for us! We were there on a perfect crisp autumn morning, when the Japanese maples were at their peak, displaying a riot of intense colours. Here’s how we enjoyed our time there: - We parked ourselves on one of the few benches along the Uji River, somewhere along the tree-lined stretch closes to Omotesando Street, just before the first bridge to the small island -- & enjoyed our take-away breakfast under the maple trees. - We enjoyed strolling along both sides of the Uji River, crossing bridges & taking in the views of old buildings & maple trees lining the riverbank. - We particularly loved the walk up the vibrantly colourful tunnel of maple trees to the Koshoji Temple. While I had read somewhere that this was a favourite fall foliage spot for avid photographers, I was pleasantly surprised that we had the place almost all to ourselves, on a weekday morning, before 9am. - We had fun participating in a tea lesson & shopping for green tea in one of the many long established tea shops along the nearby Omotesando old street. - We enjoyed tasting green tea flavored food & all things matcha including green tea soba, green tea jelly & matcha ice-cream. Really, on hindsight, we should have spent the night in Uji too!

This is quiet park on the Uji River away from the maddening crowd. It is a good spot to take a break while on your wandering of Uji. Just a nice spot.
