Its capital is Düsseldorf; the largest city is Cologne. Four of Germany's ten largest cities (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and Essen) are located in this state, as well as the second largest metropolitan area on the European continent, Rhine-Ruhr.

Nice tour option if you are in Bonn/Cologne area or near those. Access by car or public transportation. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. I went there in the Summer and the view was amazing. Make sure to take the Drachenfelsbahn (rack railway) up to the top to go see first the Medieval ruined castle Burg Drachenfels and the great view of the Rhine, then go back to the railway and get off at the neogothic castle: Schloss Drachenburg, lower on the hill. I personally recommend this for Castles passionates!
