The statue of John Bunyan is at the end of the High Street at the junction with Dame Alice Street and it's worth checking out if you are investigating the history of Bedford and it's most famous author.

This bust of Archbishop Trevor Huddleston is the work of sculptor Ian Waters and was first unveiled by the Bishop of St. Albans in 1999, a year after Huddleston’s death. The plinth records Nelson Mandela’s comment that no white man did more to fight apartheid than Huddleston. Mandela himself re-dedicated the sculpture on a visit to Bedford in 2000. The sculptor Ian Waters went on to create the statue of Mandela in Parliament Square and the memorial to the International Brigades in Jubilee Gardens.

While in Bedford, I had the privilege to see the memorial to John Howard, the noted penal reformer and philanthropist. In addition, Bedford also has a house once used by John Howard and his chapel, which is now a night club. Persons interested in criminal justice issues would enjoy seeing this important influence on correctional history and practice.

The Meeting a work dating from 1996 by sculptor John Mills stands in front of the stone facade of Bedford’s Harpur Centre. It shows a father, with the family dog beneath his legs and a youngster on his shoulders, collecting three other children from school. This is a theme appropriate to a spot which used to be the front playground of Bedford Modern School.

I went to the unveiling years ago. The faces light up at night. The brick and lace details are beautiful. Would have been cool of they could have been placed a couple of metres further apart, so that you could properly walk through them
