A La Turka Northgate

Reviewed By louisag359

We just spent the evening in your branch. Our first trip to A La Turka. I have heard only good things but left tonight feeling bitterly disappointed and undervalued as a paying customer. When we arrived we were not told about the belly dancer you had booked for the restaurant, nor the appallingly loud music you would be playing. You placed my group right underneath a speaker, to the back of the restaurant and began playing music for the belly dancer. Now this music wasn’t just loud, it was so loud you couldn’t hear the other people in the party talking across the table, you couldn’t hear yourself think. When I politely asked one of the waitresses if the music could be turned down (I had no idea it was for the belly dancer, we couldn’t see her from around the corner) I was told no, you couldn’t. I explained that I have a hearing impairment and wear a hearing aid. The music was unbearable. She said that they had paid for the belly dancer and she needed loud music to dance to. The waitress show absolutely no consideration for me, a paying customer, at all. When I reiterated I was wearing hearing aids and was extremely uncomfortable I was again told the music couldn’t be turned down but it’s was ok, it would only last a few more minutes (no that didn’t make me feel any better about my significant discomfort) The music was played it this volume on another 3-4 occasions. I felt really upset and awkward about complaining further. One of the managers came to assure me that they would do what’s they could and check I was ok. I was then told that it was a busy Friday night with paid entertainment and I had to accept that given the nature of the restaurant.... I didn’t feel comfortable enough the complain further. When the bill came, there was an automatic service charge of 12.5% added to the bill. I didn’t want to paying this as I felt the response to my issue showed any respect or understanding but the rest of my party paid it as they felt, given it was added to the bill automatically it seemed fairly compulsory. They also felt reluctant to pay 12.5% as a service charge, given the lack of respect that was shown. I left the restaurant feeling bitterly disappointed with my experience and really sad to have been put in such a difficult position. I have never had an issue in other restaurants with noise like it and I have never wanted to walk out without paying more. The food was excellent and I couldn’t not fault it but I will not be returning to A la turka. They clearly do not value their customers or have any respect for known disabilities such as impaired hearing. What a shame A la Turka Northgate, what a shame!Hello and thank you for your feedback. It happened as I was personally involved in the situation as I personally came to you and asked if everything was alright. We offered to lower the volume to an acceptable level for you and when we came back to check if that level was alright you said it was ok, then we said it only lasts for 3 minutes every 15 20 minutes for a total of one hour. So for a total of maximum 15 minutes of louder music you decided that you were disrespected by our staff and gave us 1 star. We are not going to accept people who use their disability to make an issue bigger than it was. We were actually concerned by your situation hence the repeated visits at the table to ask you if it was alright. We have advertised on our Facebook pages numerous times that we have a belly dancer so you had all the information before planning you visit. The dancer was in you area of the restaurant at least once, but after you complained she decided she should stay on the front side. We apologise that you felt disrespected ,but we reserve our right to respectfully disagree. Thank you and we hope that you will change your mind as these are quite minor issues that can be resolved easily by either moving to another table( if available) or letting us know of your situation when booking your table.Thank you!

Really impressed with this cafe although more a restaurant than a cafe. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a paella with all fresh ingredients which was really tasty. The wine was palatable and reasonably priced. All served in surroundings with a really interesting decor and ambience. A lunchtime menu is served with a really good choice. With all the eateries in Canterbury if you want something really different this is the one to go for. I would highly recommend this restaurant you won’t be disappointed.

A La Turka Westgate

The ambience is great, the food is very tasty, it’s a little pricey (but it is in Canterbury) but the separation between foodstuffs is appalling. I can only assume this given my physiological reaction in the morning after having a vegetable kebab. This must have been cooked with the meat - I know the signs after 25 years as a vegetarian. The dishes labelled with the friendly “V” cannot be trusted here. When dietary labelling is so much to the fore this restaurant needs to take its vegetarian food preparation seriously or not sell them as vegetarian friendly.Hello Chris,We;re sorry about your reaction and we can assure you that our staff are taking all necessary measures in this regard. Obviously as with any other restaurant this cannot always be fully achieved in a fast paced kitchen. Scientifically though you couldn't possibly have a physiological reaction to having molecular amounts of meat protein in your diet altough we might be wrong. We promise we will look into it and continue to improve.

Authentic Italian cuisine, created by two young childhood friends and inspired by the finest, freshest ingredients.

I went to the the Olive grove with my husband and mother-in-law. We ordered the vege platter, the lamb special and halloumi starter. The food was delicious, especially the vegetable pancake with the manager was very happy to share the recipe for. The service was quick and friendly, and the food was well presented and delicious. Music was nice and not intrusive, so I can fully recommend dining here.

This was my second visit, and I was as disappointed as I was in my first visit..in first visit we asked waitress to pack left over food...but after waiting for half an hour we found out she didn’t understand us properly and food was thrown out. This time my girls ordered fish fingers and chips as kid meal, waitress brought scampi instead of fish fingers, after eating one my girls realised it is not fish fingers, It took us 20minute to get waitress back to our table...meanwhile my girls ate only chips...she admitted her mistake. By the time we already finished our food as very very small portion size...she asked if we still need finish fingers, we said no, but we r not going to pay for scampi as it wasn’t ordered. She brought bill and cost of scampi was in bill, we called manager, he is the rudest person I ever seen on this earth...instead of apologising he said though it was mistake to give you scampi but ur girls ate whole meal....( though waitress told him they just ate chips, they tasted one scampi and rest were on plates).but he was so rude and wanted us to pay...finally he left our table in very rude way..we paid bill and decided not to visit Tulip again...
