Food was excellent, I had a Chile relleno and the Caretta dinner. The menu called the dinner tex mex but regardless it was delicious. My wife had the Monterrey lunch and our guests had the fajita trio and thought it was really good.
Had very high expectations based on the reviews, but it was a complete disappointment. Restaurant was dark and fairly empty for lunch time, which should have been our first clue. Including my wife and I there were a total of 6 patrons. The waitress couldnât have been any less in a hurry. Frankly, it seems as if she was the only one working the restaurant. She was definitely the only front of house employee and from what we could see there was no one else in the kitchen. It took forever to get a draft beer. Like, we had our appetizer before she brought my draft beer, and there were a total of 6 diners in the restaurant. We ordered the tostones app which was 4 fried plantains literally covered with a mound of black bean paste and meat. It looked like 4 mounds of dog poop on a plate that you had to sift through to get to the plantains. It was not fresh at all, clearly microwaved. The tacos were just as awful. Unfortunately for me I got the same meat in the tacos that were on the plantains. Old, dry, horrible. My wife ordered a tamale. Again, microwaved, stale, just not good. This building must be cursed since every establishment that operates out of here is just not very good. Iâm not sure what other reviewers are eating or on what day they came or maybe they just donât know good food, but this was awful, the prices are ridiculous for the quality of food, and the service is horrible. There are definitely many other better options in Downtown Covington. Never again...

THE FOOD WAS INCREDIBLE...AND THE WAITERS, ARE AWESOME!!....My husband liked it and he hates Mexican foods...Lol. The chips with salsa, and guacamole were the best. My husband had the Shrimp Monterrey Dinner, grilled shrimp with fresh cut veggies and rice
The environment and layout is cool, had an acoustic singer there who was really good. The food was mediocre, even the chips and salsa sucked. Our waitress, Samantha was the worst ever. She was rude and in the end literally tossed the bill on the table while I wasn't looking and hadn't even asked for it...even the table beside us gave us a half smile, understanding how I was caught off guard. Not sure we'll be going back.

First time at this local favorite. The food is pretty darned good. What sets it apart from other Mexican food eateries is the quality coupled with reasonable levels of salt versus the usual overly-salted fare. Rolled tacos, regular tacos, and enchiladas (all chicken) were very good. The refried beans and rice were nice as well. Chips are fresh and unsaltedâexcellent. Salsa, as with everything else we had, is completely non-spicy.Weâve found it nearly impossible to locate Mexican food in Louisiana anywhere close to the spiciness to which weâd grown accustomed in New Mexico and Arizona. Thought weâd hit on something good when we discovered Navarroâs in Lacombe. But now that theyâve closed, El Portal will have to suffice.

We had enchiladas special 9.75, and beef al carbon 12.99, And 2 drinks 30.05 total. My cheese enchiladas lacked cheese, rice was good, but no refried beans, steak strips were very good. Hubsand said his food was good but his steak strips a little fatty. Chips were stale and cold. Salsa was average heat. Price was average. I would try again but something different on menu. service was fast as our waitress was moving as fast as she could. Yep big tip for that lady, she's not the cook. Manager or own came by our table and ask us how everything was, but we had just got our food so we didn't know yet. All in all potential but not quite there yet.

First time here and we were impressed with the very friendly service. Happy hour is 2-6 with $2 drafts and $4 margaritas. I ordered the red snapper tacos and they were perfectly cooked. You get three of them with two sides. I got the taco soup (delish) and the beans Carboni which comes as a soup also. You should definitely give these people a shot at your Mexican food.
