The birthplace of the tango is, like the dance itself, captivating, seductive and bustling with excited energy. Atmospheric old neighborhoods are rife with romantic restaurants and thumping nightlife, and Buenos Aires' European heritage is evident in its architecture, boulevards and parks. Cafe Tortoni, the city's oldest bar, will transport you back to 1858, and the spectacular Teatro Colon impresses just as it did in 1908. Latin America's shopping capital offers the promise of premium retail therapy along its grand, wide boulevards.

Instituto de Espanol Rayuela

We are a team of professional career Spanish teachers who graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and other top academic institutions in Argentina. In 1993, we founded our own Spanish school, which we named Rayuela (Hopscotch) as a tribute to Julio Cortázar's world-famous novel, and as a reminder that teaching and learning a language should always be an enjoyable game of communication. Today, as much as yesterday, we take pride in leading a school that offers quality classes in a friendly and relaxed environment, and which at the same time is totally independent from any language corporation.

My friend and I wanted to improve our Spanish since we were travelling through Spanish-speaking Latin America for six months. As we both like Buenos Aires very much, it seemed like a great opportunity to stay in town for four weeks while joining a language class. After some research, we decided on Rayuela and I’m glad we did. The school, which is located in the San Telmo district, is relatively small so there is ample opportunity to adapt the classes to the needs of the students. Owner/teacher Alejandro and his team always made sure we were up to speed and happy with the lessons as well as the general set-up. The groups were put together based on a placement test we did ahead of time. We both had a few years of Spanish in school but with that being decades ago, we often felt at a loss before when we actually had to speak the language. At Rayuela, they provided us with a solid base of Spanish, both in terms of grammar and of vocabulary. For each grammar lesson, there were plenty of exercises to ensure we understood. Moreover, we had many opportunities to speak and, hence, to use the newly learned forms in conversation. The best thing for me was that at times, we left the course material behind to talk about current political events and the differences between our countries, which made what we learned even more relevant for everyday life. Our teacher Jonatan patiently took the time to answer any question and worked hard to get us all talking in Spanish. We both noticed a significant improvement in our Spanish abilities – and we had fun doing so. Don’t get me wrong, learning a language is hard work. But it’s just so worth it – vale la pena – when it pays off.
