Top 7 Japanese food in Pasadena, California, United States

April 13, 2020 Frederic Celentano

Find out what Japanese restaurants to try in Pasadena. Most famous for hosting the annual New Year's Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl, Pasadena is more than just a football town. Its extravagant City Hall boasts a beautiful Baroque dome, a courtyard garden and relaxing fountain. On South Orange Boulevard, known as Millionaires' Row, there are landmarked mansions to rival the most opulent homes of Beverly Hills. That chattering in the air is probably the local population of naturalized Red-crowned Amazon parrots.

Enjoyed a fabulous birthday celebration for my wife Lorraine. Very elegant setting, for an expensive splurge outing. For starters, we shared grilled Spanish octopus with pear and yuzu/kosho--the fat, luscious tentacle was tenderized to perfection; we could have used a little more of the pear.Lorraine had miso-marinated Chilean sea bass with braised Belgium endive in a honey lemon jus; our friend Sonja had grilled "jidori" free-range chicken breast in a Balsamic green peppercorn sauce and braised Belgium endive; and I loved the roasted rack of lamb in a rosemary sauce with potato mousseline and legumes de saison. For desert we shared a Grand Marnier souffle. The restaurant surprised Lorraine with an ice cream birthday gift in a pastry cup topped with strawberry sauce and crowned with a crystallized sugar lace netting, sitting inside a decorative sauce ring with a heart design. The chef is Japanese, trained in classic French cooking. Bon appetite, c'est magnifique!

This is a family owned and run restaurant and everything shows it. The chefs are fantastic and the sushi is the best. My grandson (age 7) gobbled down 16 Salmon sushi at one sitting. Just let them give you what is best. But Dynamite is my favorite.

Osawa Pasadena

I make it a habit of staying in Pasadena each month JUST to dine at Osawa. It was a mess last Sunday. They sat us quite late for our reservation, when we were finally seated well after our 6:45 reservation they were out of ALL the whole fish, the bagna cauda and more. The portions were noticeably smaller and the staff clearly overrun. I am so sad as finding this quality of Japanese food is tough - I don’t know if I would return.
