Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park shelters foxes, sea lions and otters and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing.
Things to do in Isla Chiloe
We were desperate for a proper coffee after 10 days of Nescafé and came across this cafe on our tour of the wooden churches. It was closed for a private kidsâ birthday party, but the owner asked the mum in charge if we could come in and she said OK. He has a real coffee machine and we enjoyed americanos with a little milk in the side. There were nice-looking tarts and the speciality is pancakes. There is Wi-fi and very clean toilets. A real gem in Chiloe!

Located in the Hotel de Castro in the city of Castro on Isla Chiloe. Service was friendly and slow-paced. Plan on a leisurely meal. For a late lunch we had three seafood dishes and a side of potato fries. The boiled abalone (3 pieces) starter served with mayonnaise was very tender. The almond-crusted conger eel fish fillet was well seasoned and served with roasted vegetables. And the crabmeat baked in a stone bowl with cheese was rich and filled with a generous amount of shredded crabmeat. The price may be higher than average prices, but we enjoyed a quiet meal away from the busy seaside area.

Flavors of Chiloé and the World Fusion cuisine based on local, organic and agroecological products.
Excellent vegetable bake and very nice lamb stew. They had several different dishes than the all-too-uniform menus of other restaurants in the region. Wait staff were friendly, fund, and helpful. Highly recommended.Thank you JimE_Colorado for your visit. We hope that we can welcome you again.

Our concierge at the palafito where we stayed suggested this little restaurant managed by young local guys and it's been really a nice surprise. As a courtesy rather than the usual bread with butter and pebre they offered delicious mussels. We then tried the ceviche, ravioli filled with mussels and pumpkin smoked with rosemary and charquican all fresh and really well prepared. Also notable the excellent quality/price ratioDear client, we deeply appreciate that you have visited us and we hope we had given you a nice gastronomic experience and an excellent service. On behalf of all our team, we will be pleased to bring you a great moment whenever you want. We hope you have a magical stay on the island, and for reservations, have no doubt to contact us at 652532828.

Having seen the glowing reviews we were very much looking forward having dinner at Rucalaf. The service was in fact friendly and very helpful in explaining all local dishes. Also the drinks we've got especially the murta sour were seriously good. The starters and the main dish were consistently dry, hard to chew and simply disappointing. I tried the pulmay as a main dish and I never had mussels as dry as these. Considering it was supposed to be a stew with some broth to it, this dish was abysmal. The dessert was okayish. A caramel cream with myrtle berries. Slightly to sweet but enjoyable. In the end the bill was not near worth it. Since there are numerous much better options quite nearby I would not go there again.
