Disappointing and Underwhelming ... don’t believe the hype

Reviewed By Todd F

I flew 16 hours from Shanghai to LAX then drove 90 minutes here to Malibu. I requested an early check in since I would arrive at 8 am and requested this in advance. The terrible intern that works at the front desk still keeps me waiting and now tells me check in is at four pm. If I had known this in advance I wanna have stayed at Shutters on the Beach in nearby Santa Monica or the Californian in Santa Barbara both better values and more attention to service. So far despite the cloudy weather and average ocean view this place appears underwhelming more like a tired Days Inn with a bland neutral worn out interior. It’s been a horrible experience. Save your money and stay elsewhere.

Calamigos is a most exquisite place to stay! Well appointed cottages, immense grounds, fragrant bushes scenting the air wherever you go. Weddings venues immersed in natural surroundings. Service above and beyond and breakfast this morning was fabulous. Oh, and the bunnies hopping around are so cute!

A Perfect Mini-Moon

Reviewed By 50adriani

My wife and I got married on Monday in Topanga, CA. If you haven’t had the misfortune of visiting, Topanga is mixture of the worst of several worlds; the bad cell service and barrenness of a rural area, the astronomical property values of a big city, and the ever-present aroma of human waste. The Surfrider Hotel is NOT in Topanga. Located in neighboring Malibu — and yet worlds apart — the Surfrider has proven to be the perfect spot for our mini-moon. While our room is not particularly large, it is adequately-sized and comfortable, with a private balcony (complete with hammock), nice furnishings and an awesome shower. There is a great beach right across the street as well. Having worked in hotels for a decade, I can say with some authority that the staff here is excellent. Lucy and Trevor on the rooftop were especially attentive to my and my wife’s needs, with Lucy even remembering a dietary allergy of mine from the day before. Finally, the restaurant at this hotel is incredible. It is only available to guests, which means we never had to wait for a table. There is a very relaxed vibe, and the food is absolutely delicious. Many coastal people consider themselves “foodies.” I am definitely not one. Or should I say, WAS not one; the dishes here are so consistently good, I have found myself trying (and invariably enjoying) menu items I would have scoffed at from anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Malibu Country Inn

A lovely country inn tucked atop a beachside bluff in beautiful Malibu! This antique inn has antique values - great customer service. We offer ocean, mountain and garden view rooms, private patios and a heated pool for those who don't want to go in the cold ocean a block away... Our median price and exceptional customer service make staying here an unsurpassable value.

Pool unsafe for kids, mold growing in bathrooms, front desk argumentative/condescending (poor customer service)

Reviewed By 270courtneyn

Our family of four (parents and two toddlers) stayed here with one night reservation. Outlets in Room 21 were missing plate covers, cords sticking out, mold growing in shower tiles and spotting mold all over ceiling. Pool stairs were right outside our room, and there is a ripped/detached pool fence inoperable at the stairs (toddlers can easily walk down there to pool), and a 2' tall picket fence at the deep end of pool lounge, with parking on either side. Felt very uncomfortable and unsafe (hotelier ignoring liabilities for drowning accidents). I did not get a chance to provide this feedback on safety (and liability for their hotel) because we had to pack up and leave in middle of night for a medical emergency for our daughter. We called hotel two days later to ask if they recovered my daughters swimsuit we left behind in the rush to leave at night. They did have it. A highly-inappropriate and unprofessional argument ensued with the front desk female who raised her voice at me, ignored my requests for shipping it to me (I offered to pay shipping), demanded the only option was picking it up physically (hotel policies typically allow for Options to send goods left behind for a charge - felt obvious that if someone stays in a hotel they 99% of the time don't live nearby. But she was unable to understand that and demanded I come back to get it ??‍♀️) She was unwilling to problem solve or offer solutions and when j came up with creative ones for her so that I could get the swimsuit back, she shot them all down with no explanation. No sympathy or warmth for our medical leave in the middle of the night and argumentative/unprofessional with me. I asked to speak to management and she yelled at me to call back tomorrow :( I have a feeling any further effort will be wasted in my end and further the frustrating and disappointing experience... It was deeply saddening, our family felt uncared for, belittled, and hurt by this entire experience. It was unsafe, unclean, poorly managed, and no effort with customer service. The medical scare was enough to ruin our little overnight to Malibu, and our experience with this hotel staff unfortunately secured that :(

Malibu Private Beach Apartments

CANCELLED BY OWNER

Reviewed By dorak252

We booked this place for a mini-moon since our original wedding had been cancelled by the venue. We still wanted to have a small trip when we saw these apartments view of ocean; we were quick to book through booking.com (another incompetent, unhelpful and unreliable agency! DONT USE!). We booked 2 nights; paid 50% of stay upfront. After that, owner was nowhere to be found. Would not answer or return phone calls nor respond to emails regarding upcoming. Then the ultimate shock; booking.com CANCELLED THE RESERVATION stating cc was invalid ! Mind you, they charged our cc 50% earlier with no issue! It was a mess! We are now disputing the 50% charges with both the agency and our cc company! DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS PROPERTY!

Potential and location, but dirty with no overnight desk staff

Reviewed By Baltimorebergie

I stayed here for two nights in April. I had a room with a balcony and a view of the water. The balcony was nice, and the bathroom is modern. The location is 10 minutes on foot from the Malibu pier so it’s convenient. However, the room was pretty dirty at check in. Floors were dusty and had not been cleaned, and the sheets had not been changed from the prior guests. I only figured this out when I pulled back the comforter at 10pm to go to sleep and found a crusted brown substance on the sheets. I slept on top of the comforter. I’m pretty sure it was food (I hope). I had to call 3 times to get someone to have the sheets changed. Initially, they were non-plussed and I had to explain why I needed fresh sheets more than once in the conversation. In the end, sheets were changed but no apology offered. Another downside—staff is only on site from 10-6. I would not stay here again.

Great hotel, very relaxing, sunny....just not the value for price

Reviewed By kimberlyjP252IZ

Amazing, relaxing, thoughtful hotel with fantastic poolside vibes. OK location - on PCH but not near beach. My problem is value for money. I understand the occupancy tax, but guest amenity fees and health and wellness surcharges seem really like the same thing, and the room rate is already above market rate for the location, quality, and amenities that were available for Hotel June, and tacking on additional $25 per day for parking, and then an additional $2.50 for parking tax....just seems like we are being squeezed for more and more fees even if they're small - I don't think Hotel June should be coming off as a place that nickels and dimes.....it really doesn't sit well.
