This is by no means a Champneys Spa resort, but still a great local experience that should not be missed. The staff there are just fabulous and helpful and the Thai massage a real treat. Do give it a go, and also take part in the egg boiling in the natural spring,

We stayed at the cottages and the guest rooms over songkran weekend. Very close to the crazy horse buttress. The owner is helpful and accommodating, and her properties are well equipped with full fridge hot showers and aircon for a very reasonable price. The beds are quite hard in both locations.

We had a very friendly family welcome from Pranee and Eric when we arrived early. Pranee went out of her way to make some Thai food for my wife, (Issan style) which was very nice of her to do. The location is beautiful and the bungalow was very clean and homely. Just perfect. I managed to play my booked game of golf at Highlands, which is only 1km from here which makes the location perfect for staying, which is far cheaper than Highlands resort & more homely and relaxing. Finding Mai Siam was not a problem with todays technology. Breakfast was excellent, light and just what was needed to start the day. Eric and Pranee continued to make our short stay of 2 days here very comfortable and relaxing ensuring that we had all we needed. Free Wifi in rooms and Restaurant & also Plenty space for Parking We live in Chiang Mai City and we would definitely come back again. We highly recommend the Mai Siam resort to everyone.

First issue was the significant difference between the Agoda / owner room rate and what the owner's website rate specified for the same room. We booked at what was THB1,500 / night but La Bhu Sala's website had the same room specified as THB 800... Upon arrival into our room, the shower was covered in dirt and the lack of sufficient privacy a concern for my wife wanting to take a shower. The 'windows' in the shower area do not fully close off any views from the outside, so whilst 'rustic' and a rural location, it could have been better fitted out. The sheets were not freshly laundered, mattress had a slant to starboard and the fridge needed a wipe down. No 'sitting area' despite it being advertised, well, save for a chair outside the room. Breakfast in the morning smacked more of what the staff were eating, read local traditional b'fast rice congee, thus no deviation from the 'all included' breakfast was possible without additional charge. No fresh coffee for example or fruit except bananas. Asked for yoghurt and told where the local 7-11 was then saw staff eating yoghurt the following morning. Considering the THB1,500 / night versus what that would get you per night in Chiang Mai itself, we were clearly being ripped off. We ended up staying at another homestay within a kilometre of Bhu Sala, for less than half the price, and it was clean, quiet, mountain view, sitting area, wifi etc etc. We have both travelled extensively through Thailand and Asia for 20 years and the key point here is the difference between the expectation set by the website and what you experience in reality. Point being that for the price, it was fair to expect a lot more than what is provided. La Bhu Sala may once upon a time, been a great place to stay, but the absence of any care in running the place shows in the lack of cleanliness and a very tired feel.
