Evaluation of 3 night stay¹ Date : 12/07/2018 – 15/07/2018 Location : Hotel “Les Rives” – Guebwiller – France. Price : Package deal TUI (brochure prices) Summary : score : 3,5/5 Listed as a 3-star hotel, in our experience, it is absolutely worth that rating. It does not have the fancy extras, like a swimming pool, sauna or fitness area, but it is a nice hotel for a few nights of overnight stay. There are some small remarks on the fact that is shows signs of use, but price-quality, also with the breakfast that is available, it is more than good. It is pretty well wheel chair adapted, although we have doubts that the room entrance doors are wide enough. An asset is its location : just outside the village, next to a small lake/pond (book a room with a view on that as else you are on the back/street side). There is a regular restaurant and hotel on one side, and a pizza/Italian restaurant on the other side, sharing the same parking and referred to as the “Domaine du Lac”. This is also what you will see on indicators in the village. Also, the completeness of the breakfast, considering it is a 3* hotel in France, is top. The drawbacks : it gives a slightly worn-out impression (although the bathroom and toilet seemed to be refurbished), certainly the desk in our room was a disgrace. Additionally, in a TUI package deal, the dinner is included in the restaurant across the parking (“Les Terrasses”). The menu for the package deal has fancy names, but quality-wise is under the standards. 2 times chicken and once cheap fish in 3 days, poor in vegetables, and in general in taste. After the second evening, not knowing the menu for the 3rd dinner, we were thinking if we would not be better off with a McDo, but we still opted to go for the reserved restaurant…. wrong decision… Stay away from that restaurant if you are thinking of the standard day menu. Hotel “Les Rives” in itself, and its service, is absolutely recommendable for a few days stay. Details : Environment : score : 4,5/5 • Located at the side of the city of Guebwiller, with a 10 minutes’ car drive from the center of city, approximately 25 km from the Colmar airport. • With the back to a departemental street, built in ski-hotel style with some 15-20 rooms, view on a small lake/pond (if you have a room with lake view). Surrounded by hills. • 2 restaurants nearby, others available in the city. • The walking distance towards the city center should not be underestimated. Easily 15 – 20 minutes. • Neither public transport nor taxi port was noticed. Most, if not all, guests arrive by car. • Sufficient parking space for your car next to the hotel. Outside : score : 4/5 • Outside of the hotel is very clean and we saw a maintenance/gardener guy busy with maintenance and watering plants almost always when we were present. • Nice surrounding, inviting you, if weather permits, to take a coffee/tea on the terrace and enjoy the swan and ducks moving about in the pond. • When arriving by car, entrance to hotel is self-explanatory. Entrance well-lit and inviting. • No taxis are waiting outside the hotel, but via the reception desk, a taxi can be ordered. • A lot of parking space at the side of the hotel. Reception : score : 4/5 • Service : o Quick and professional. o One receptionist always available, and does the work with a smile, certainly the younger ones, and try to make you convenient and try to solve your query. o The check-in was standard and quick, didn’t take 5 minutes. Most of the arriving guests have had a long drive. A small welcome drink could be an asset. • Explanations : strict minimum. No extra info on surroundings, points of interest,… o Received the key to the room, indications on all services of the hotel, opening times of restaurants/breakfast, but all kept to a strict minimum. • Furniture at reception, breakfast and other places are OK in style, but not very convenient in use (low, back support is not optimal) • No music in the lobby. Too bad… Parking : score : 4,5/5 • The hotel has a common open-air parking, with the other nearby hotel and restaurants. It is commonly referred to as “Domaine du Lac”. • It is very clean, and trees provide shade on sunny days. • There are no barriers protecting trespassers to come on the terrain (as there is a resto nearby, and the parking is common, not much use in having barriers…). If you come with bicycles, those can be stored in a separate garage, at no cost. Elevator : score : 3/5 • The elevator is not the most modern one of its kind. • The elevator is very clean. • The elevator is somewhat noisy and slow, and not a wonder of technology. The doors hit my wife at the moment she entered. A painful experience… • As the hotel is not that big, and not really busy, an elevator was available almost instantly all the time. Corridors : score : 3,5/5 • The corridors are covered with full carpet. • Corridors are generally well-lit, with clear indications for the room numbers. (The room numbers are in a modern writing, and not easily readable). Room (103) : score : 3,5/5 Room : Double with bath/shower combination, terrace (without chairs ?) and lake view. • Electronic entrance via room card. • Lightning and airco do not need a room card to be triggered. • Normal size room, however there are signs of usage. The desk is a disgrace for this room. • Safe. But how to put it on ? Does it come with a charge ? (We didn’t use it, so we did not bother). • No small refrigerator. A minus. • Located almost at the end of the corridor, quiet. The main drawback is the noise of the elevator and from the door leading to the stairs, but in this room, you do not have any trouble from that. • Overall a quiet room, with the sun from later in afternoon. • Insulation : o Window : Electric shutters outside for terrace window and door, making the room completely dark. A plus ! Really appreciated !. No noise penetration via the window. o Door/Walls : Corridor noise penetrates does not penetrate in the room due to the corridor carpets. Next rooms noise does hardly penetrate into the room. Overhead room noise hardly penetrates in the room. • Competent and quality built-in airco available, with digital temperature setting. Nice ! Didn’t expect this in a 3* hotel. • Double bed : 2 hard matrasses, good square size pillows, 1 bed duvet. • No water heather with coffee or tea. • 2 1/2 liter bottles of water at arrival. No refill. • Convenient television with sufficiently big screen (32 or 37 inch). • Extra chair • Worn out desk with chair. • Sufficiently big, well-lit, cupboard to store clothing and others for a weeks’ vacation stay. • Wifi strength is OK, but not always stable (eg. for watching TV) Bathroom : • Basic shower equipement in a large bathroom. • Separate sink with wall-to-wall mirror and hairdryer. • Marble covered. • Showergel available. Breakfast : score : 3,5/5 • Buffet style, with overall good quality and pretty elaborate choice. • Convenient choice in different types of bread. However, what is called a croissant here does not resemble a croissant • Warm (eggs, bacon,…) and cold different types of salami, ham, cheese available. • Few cereals available. • Orange juice, milk, etc. available. • Different types of tea, hot coco, coffee available. • Staff is very friendly, but under-staffed for the busy period of breakfast whereby tables have to be more frequently re-set then at dinner time. • Breakfast area was well-lit and well decorated. • Drawback : very busy at breakfast time, people have to be seated in the bar area. Pool : N/A Bar : score : N/A • A bar is available, but we did not use it. Restaurant : score : 2,5/5. • Buffet style, reasonable choice, but not up to a 4-star hotel standard in our opinion. • Every dinner there is a food theme (International, Portuguese, …) • The food is overall good to very good ! A plus ! • Every dinner choice between the regular cold vegetables (tomato, cucumber,…) some salads (some you see appear 2 or 3 times per week), cold fish (tuna, mackerel) as starter. 2 to 3 meat choices, 2 to 3 warm vegetable choice, and then rice, potato, fries, 1 type of soup, fruit salad, a couple of pies, 2 flavors of ice cream, but the ice cream is not sufficiently hard (if you notice that the (empty) cooler is off the whole day, he can not be on a decent temperature at dinner time. • Drinks are brought at the table via waiter, of which there are more than sufficient around. Still, they stay professional. Personal interaction, with a joke or a personal touch, even after a few days when you start to see who is who, seems not always to be simple. • Just as a remark : the price of the drinks is not cheap (considering 2,80 Euro for a tonic water…) • The biggest drawback that really requires attention is the fact that the restaurant can not cope with the number of guests in the hotel. At rush-hour during dinner, people have to be seated in the bar area. We’ve seen guests really pissed off by this policy. The same applies for breakfast. • Before May, there is no All-in possible, only half-board. • Considering all the above, when you want to stay in this hotel, our recommendation is to book a breakfast-only, and enjoy the sufficiently available Funchal restaurants for dinner. The location is very popular with a nearby pizzeria and the restaurant at the hotel looking onto a small lake. The customer service was average. The room was clean and comfortable. The restaurant had tables a little too close together on the patio overlooking the lake and the service was average. The food was good though a little overpriced. Breakfast was served inside and was fine.
