Cossimbazar Palace of the Roys (Rajbari)

Overall a good but not great experience - yawning gap between hype & reality!!

Reviewed By saibalg2014

Our group comprising 4 families stayed at the Cossimbazar Rajbari for two nights recently & this review is the consensus opinion of the group. Starting with a traditional welcome by blowing conch shells, the hospitality extended by the staff was excellent throughout. The daily lunch/ dinner items served , specially the Royal Feast ( Rajbhog) were excellent & every effort was made to cater to our culinary demands even if the item we wanted was not on the menu. The Manager -Nishith- was very cooperative & went out of his way to meet our needs. He planned our sightseeing itinerary & arranged for the cars, even despatching a replacement car immediately when one of the cars had problems with its AC during our tour- truly great service!! One of the highlights of our stay was the dance performance by a group of children. This was held in the Durga mandap & we were charmed by the talent on display by the young performers. We came to know that the dance training for the kids was being supported & sponsored by the owners of the Palace- a truly commendable initiative! Our stay was not without its disappointments though. These comments are meant for the owners because only they can address these concerns. Touted as a heritage stay in Royal ambience, the Rajbari sadly falls far short of the class expected from such an appellation. The rooms are on the smaller side & seem to have been carved out of the larger rooms of the original Palace, resulting in awkward layouts specially for the toilet & adjoining areas. The room furnishings are minimal and the partition walls are so thin that one can eavesdrop on the talk going on in adjoining room. The mattresses as well as the pillows are not soft & do not provide the anticipated Royal levels of comfort at all!! The décor, starting with the lobby area, strikes a discordant note immediately on stepping into the Rajbari. One would expect at least a small touch of Royal elegance at the lobby / lounge areas which are the first to be seen by a guest. However the tiny Reception lobby may be termed generously as utilitarian & the lounge area sports furniture that seem to have been either crafted by a local carpenter or maybe procured from a garage sale. Even the sofa / chairs upholstery don’t match. Some of the walls display cheap picture prints - a bizarre potpourri of Chinese scenery, abstract images and even a few faded ancestral portraits. Overall the haphazard décor seems to be a testimony to the lack of taste of whoever was responsible for renovating the original Palace. The room tariff is at par with some of Kolkata’s 5-star hotels. This, together with the descriptions on the Rajbari website, will lead any guest to rightfully expect a Royal stay with plushness and elegance. However, both are lacking and the guest will be sorely disappointed. While the staff try their best to provide a happy guest experience, they can do little to change the ambience. The Palace hospitality offering is not very old. There is still time to put in serious effort to enhance current quality standards. Else word of mouth will surely spread among travellers & they will shun a stay where there is so much gap between hype & reality. Hopefully the owners will take some action on this constructive criticism.

Terrible experience

Dirty room, inadequate stuffs, poor management. Horrible experience, after 11am we didn't get breakfast so we bound to leave the hotel. The manager didn't even apologize. Though the breakfast was complementary, we didn't take that as they were delaying so much... So that should be their decency to less that breakfast !
